Waking up with a massive head ache and an empty stomach is unpleasant any day. Waking up with a massive head ache and an empty stomach in a strange world with your wrists chained together, surrounded by strange men who had chased you the other night is slightly worse.I say slightly because I want to sound brave, however that's not really working considering I'd be shaking in my boots, if I was standing. And actually had boots.
I took a deep breath and took in my surroundings.
The first thought that came into my head was, WHAT...
WHAAAaAaaaAAaaaaaAAaaaaAAaaaAAAAaaaTTTT!!!
After a few more seconds of this my brain finally remembered that it had to actually function to keep me alive. I looked around and saw that we where in an identical clearing to the one from last night however there a few differences.
For one the trees were purple.
This time I took a shaky breath, which didn't really do mush so I took another. Before my brain could only form one word, but know it's like I went into over drive. The more I thought the more I panicked.
OK, so the trees are purple. That's cool, I like purple. Purple is cool. Maybe I'm drunk. Aw shit someone probably drugged me! I'm going to die. The trees are still purple! I'm insane, that's got to be it! I've gone insane! I'm going to be sent to a mental asylum! Oh crap I don't think I can survive being in a mental asylum.
As I stood up I noticed no one else was awake, and that there were considerably less of them. Quickly glancing around, I counted only five. This was my chance to get away.
I ran to the edge of the clearing and was about to keep going until I realized my wrists were still chained together. Going back to the sleeping men I quickly searched around for a key, by awkwardly poking bags with my foot, trying to find a pocket or something where they might have put it.
That is until I realized something was off, and it wasn't the purple trees.
None of them were breathing.
Shrieking, I stumbled backward, eventually falling to the ground. The world spun.
This was way too much. Bile rose in my throat, and I glanced at the men.
I puked.
The men had looked normal at first glance, but now their lifelessness seemed more obvious.
I sat still for a while, rocking back and forth occasionally. My legs pulled to my chest, I rested my head on my knees, covering my eyes. Hoping that maybe if I didn't look it would all just go away.
Taking a series of deep breaths, I came to the conclusion that they were dead and there was nothing I could do about that. What I could do was find a key so that I wouldn't end up dead too.
Walking on shaky legs, I came across a bag next to one of the men, and upon opening it and emptying it of its contents, I found the key. I was instantly relieved that I didn't have to search one of the dead men.
Kneeling on the ground I picked up the key. I tried to unlock the chains, but my hands were shaking so badly it became hard to even hold the key.
After a few tries, I was able to insert the key in the lock, letting the chains fall to the ground. With that done I left as fast as my shaking legs could take me. I definitely didn't want to stay around in case someone or something found them. I had seen what happened after a squirrel had died in a forest, and let's just say I never want to dissect animals.
I decided to try and find some sort of civilization before it got dark. Or at least a safe place to sleep. My pace was slow, and as I went I pushed thoughts of the dead men from my mind. Occupying it instead with worries of this strange world.
For one thing, I was going to need food and water. I quickly wiped any thoughts of eating plants from my mind, the purple trees told me that the plant life here was definitely different and I had no idea if something could be poisonous or not.
This left me only the option of eating animals as a source of food and if you didn't get it before, I'm not too good with killing and carving out the guts of animals.
I was shaken from my thoughts by a loud howl. It seemed to come from somewhere far away, so I continued walking, a pit of nerves growing in my stomach.
Another howl sounded, this time it was closer, and with it came a low thundering. Not knowing what it was, I did the first thing that came to mind. I climbed a purple tree.
