Chapter 1

Frustrated, I fiddle with my keys and unlock the front door to my house. "Macy! I need to tell you something." Leah-Anne, my mother, says, gesturing me to sit down with her. "Okay?" I throw my brow and walk in to sit down. "Well. You know your father died a while ago, and I have been looking for someone new..." She says, playing with my dark hair. "I found a new man, and we've been dating for a while now, and we've decided to get married." "What? How could you do this to me-immediately going after someone else and suddenly getting married?!" I whimper. "Oh, Macy, I never thought it would be this way, I thought you might be h-" "Happy?" I interrupt her, "Well guess what. You thought wrong." I rip myself out of her grasp and storm outside. I sit on the steps and take out my iPhone, and receive a text from Trevor. It says to look up, and I look up to find Trevor on his longboard. "Hey cheesy!" I chuckle. "Hey Sherlock!" He laughs. We made up nicknames for each other when we were 12, and even at 19, we still call each other that. "You look bummed out," He says, sitting next to me. "My mum's getting married," I sigh. "What? But she can't ju--" We're interrupted by the thick smell of barbecue, to top the peeling scent of the oak wood that made up the house. "Woah..." I lift my head up and take a sniff. "Oh ya, that's coming from my house. We're having a barbecue party tonight, and that's why I came. I wanna invite your family," Trevor stands up. "What's the point, there's nothing left of my family." I put my head back down. "It might be nice though, to get to know your stepdad." He suggests. "Okay, I'll go tell her." I say, standing up, feeling the tension in my legs as they lift me up. I walk inside and Trevor longboards home.

"Macy?" My mum frowns as she meets me in the kitchen. "Yes, I'm still mad." I finish, and sigh. "But Trevor wants us to come over for a dinner party. Including your fiancé." "Oh, okay, are you fine with me bringing Timothy?" Leah-Anne asks. The name almost sounds threatening, as if he had already hurt someone, physically. I attempt to choke up my words, but all that comes out is a rough stutter. "Okay! It's settled. We'll go to their house around 5:30," She jumps. She leaves the room and I growl.

A faint sound of music comes on, until I can focus on it, and I hear 'Fallen' by 'Imagine Dragons'. It's Trevor's ringtone. I answer the phone and after a few seconds, finally let out a hello. "Hey, when are you coming?" He asks from the other end of the line. "Around 5:30, I have to wait for Timothy, my soon-to-be stepdad," I cough once again as I say his name. "It'll be okay, Macy. We have your favourite kind of hot dog anyways!" He tries to make me feel better, but sadly fails. I say bye and hang up the phone. I walk into the garage, aka my room. The house only came with one bedroom, and we don't have a car, so that's my room. The brick walls make it more of my style, the double bed in the corner is topped with extra sheets for my comfort. I go to sit on my bed, but hear a small meow instead. I turn around to find Chevi, my Bengal kitten. "Hey baby boy!" I smile and pick him up, holding him up to my chest. I lie down and put him by my hip, and 5 minutes later, we fall asleep.
