I'm wandering around a baby care store, keeping my eyes peeled for anything that might be of Tom ps interest, Tom is not picky thankfully. He can't tell me what he likes and what he doesn't. I found a barbie doll on the path once and brought it home, as soon as he sore it he kicked and screamed, plucked it out of my hand and threw it out the window. He's never laid eyes on barbie doll since. Toms favourite things are blankets, it's very rare to see him without a blanket draped over his shoulders. Typical, because blankets are the hardest to smuggle out of stores. As Strange as it sounds, Tom often wears diapers, I guess it reminds him of his baby days. My eyes land upon a baby blue blanket with golden moons and stars in a metal crate along with a bunch of other random things, it immediately reminds me of Tom, it was in the unwanted pile. I quickly grabbed it and looked at the laminated sign stuck to the side of the crate:
Unwanted items
Range between $2 - $4 dollars
Pay at counter :)I rummage through all the junk in my satchel to see if I have and spare change lying about. I remember the $2 dollar coin that I found on the way here and pulled it out of my pocket. Perfect I told myself Tom will love it. I walk over to the counter, exited to see Toms surprise when I present him with this golden buy.
"Good afternoon how may I help you" the young cash lady asks in a fake happy voice.
"Just this please" I say and push Toms blanket to her. He'll love it. He'll love it. She scans the tag and says "$3.50 please" and holds out her over moisturised hand. My heart drops to the floor, I feel like I'm going to start crying. "Um actually I'll just put it back" I mutter and hurry away before the cash lady could say anything. I feel the coin drop out of my hand and onto the floor but I don't care, I go over to a seat by the changing rooms and cover my dirty face with my dirty hands. I can feel my tears swelling, so I push hard on my face to make them go away. Toms blanket in my lap. Why didn't you buy me? Don't you want me? Tom would've loved it, if I had enough stupid money.~
"Excuse me little girl, you dropped this"
I look up see a young woman with a about a 4 year boy by her side, holding my $2 coin in her hand. I sniff and wipe under my eyes "oh um thanks" I mumble as I shove it into my satchel. I look down at the floor and hope the woman will go away. "Hey, I've seen you before" she says and rubs her chin in thought. I look up at her, I don't recognise her at all. "Yeah I know now!" She exclaims loudly "I saw you and your little brother in the park by the water fountain! I remember because you both had paper boats and where playing in the water of the fountain" I smile thinking of that day, Tom had broke his boat so I gave him mine, then he managed to break that one so we both jumped in the fountain pretending we where stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. "You must be a great big sister" the women says, interrupting my flashback. "Thank you" I say ' looking up at her. "Is that blanket for him?" The woman asks, pointing at the blanket on my lap. "Uh, yes" I lie " um, thanks for my coin"
"Anytime, it's was nice meeting you, I'm Emily by the way"
"I'm Marcy, it was nice meeting you too"
And she walks off with her son out of the store. I look around the baby shop and spy a cleaning lady holding a bottle of window spray. It makes my brain tick. Window, Windows, Windows!
That gave me a idea.~
I stroll casually into the bathroom with the baby blue blanket tucked up my shirt so no one would suspect anything, once I'm inside I thank god that nobody is in here with me and look around for any Windows big enough for me to fit through. Bingo! The perfect fit. I scramble my way through the window and land feet first on the cold concrete. Easy as pie. I head home, with Toms blanket in my possession.
