Darkness befalls us.
The sun sinks ever lower into the horizon, watching with blazing, desperate eyes as the moon struggles into the eastern sky, utterly unconcerned by the rising wave of darkness at its heels. The greying clouds shrink back toward the light, huddled together like a group of raggedy children shying away from the cold. The night advances in an ominous silence, dulling the blue summer sky and quieting the restless breeze. The sun slides ever further off the edge of the world, clawing for purchase on the slippery air. As the moment pass, its brightness intensifies, like lightning gathering itself before a storm. And suddenly, a thousand brilliant fiery colours erupt from the west, painting the clouds glowing scarlet and orange and gold. The sky loses its fuzziness. The winds come alive. The clouds shine triumphantly, basking in the glory of the sunset; and for a moment, the night hesitates. For a moment, the night wonders if it can ever possibly be a match for the sheer dazzling light before it.And then the moment ends. In a single movement, the night lunges forward, the colours falter, and the sun loses its fragile grip on the horizon and falls, deep into the bottomless abyss that is the other side of the world.
And then there is darkness.
The city lights come into focus, dim in the background.
The music slows.
Our breathing softens.
Far above, the first star emerges from behind the smoky clouds.
The darkness has fallen.
