Chapter One

Today was graduation.

Nerves and excitement had filled the air. Everyone I knew was looking forward to today and I guess they had reason to. It's the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new one. For me on the other hand, it's just another day. Throwing a hat in the air and getting a piece of paper means nothing to me after losing my parents and practically raising my sister the last two years. Though what gets me is that today, when everyone is taking family photos, my photo will be small and broken. They should've been here. I just have to get through the next hour or two and then I can finally put high school and its misery behind me.

I sat in the driver's seat of Justin's silver 2012 Camaro. I've always loved this car and since he is never really around to drive it, it became my graduation present from him. Tracing the silver heart necklace he'd given me around my neck, my thoughts drifted to him. I stared at our photo in the locket admiring his green eyes and perfect smile. I pictured myself running my hands through his light brown hair, kissing his flawless cheeks or holding his face in the palm my hand. I missed him, especially today. I could feel it welling inside me... that feeling of unease. I just wanted to turn around and go home, but I know Justin would never let me hear the end of it. I sighed. I just had to suck it up and get through the day.

I gathered my bag and locked the Maro. Walking up to the assembly hall, I kept an eye out for my little family. When my parents died, our closest friend Huey adopted us. He was like a big brother more than anything and still is in some ways. He has brown hair, that's always styled with an upward flick and a square jawline that flaunts a trimmed stubble. He's got green eyes too and a smile all my friends annoyingly die for. Too bad for them, he's married to Trina. She has brown hair and brown eyes that sparkle when she smiles, which is something she's almost always doing. I've never seen a two people so as in love as they are and if I'm being honest, I can't wait to meet, and envy, their future babies! And finally there's Katie, my younger sister. She's two years younger than me and even though anyone can tell you she's the younger one, we look very alike. She's got a slightly darker shade of brown hair and a rounder nose than mine, but other than that, practically identical.

Justin insisted that she have the day off school for a quality "family" day, something I'm sure was out of guilt of not being able to be here himself. It was only lucky that Huey was here to keep her company during the formalities. It's just a shame Trina couldn't be though. Her mum was diagnosed with breast cancer a while ago and she was told she has little time left. She's been given two weeks to go so Trina has been staying with her. It's sad knowing that soon, we're all going to face yet another dreadful loss.

I'd already reached the hall by the time found them waving away at me expectedly.

"Lo, congratulations. I'm so proud of you." Huey said pulling me into a hug that is a lot like coming home for Christmas. He also smelt really good, as usual.

"Thanks for coming Hue, you know it means a lot to me." I smiled back.

"I wouldn't be anywhere else. Trina is going to try and make it home today, depending on how things with her mother are."

I shook my head. "She shouldn't worry about it. I really do understand."

"Don't be silly. You know here is where she wants to be today."

I nodded feeling quite loved and cared about. Okay, maybe my parents and Justin weren't here, but Katie, Huey and possibly Trina were. That's the important bit, right?

"Okay, my turn." Katie squealed, opening her arms wide for a hug. That's when I noticed she's holding a bunch of flowers. White lilies actually.

My favourite.
