Brie slammed her foot on the gas pedal and the van took of down the road. Careening through a red light, Brie narrowly missed a pedestrian and four other cars parked alongside the road.
Amber screamed and dropped her laptop, clutching the sides of the passenger seat. Her eyes wild with fear. "I knew it! I knew we would get caught!" She wailed.
Esa's hands gripped the sides of her tank, she was trying to maintain her balance in order to keep from injuring helseft, but it was difficult, she seemed to have little control over her movements. Water was spilling out all over the place much more now. And Derek was completely soaked along with the entire floor of the van.
The police sirens screamed behind them, but at a distance. There may be hope yet. Esa glanced back through the windows and didn't see anything behind them except for the empty street and yellow glow of street lights. Brie turned quickly off the main road to the canal and Esa shrieked as her tank toppled over. The glass shattered into a million little pieces and Brie quickly slammed on the brakes, jumping out of her seat and moving quickly around the van, she threw open the back doors.
The sirens wailed louder, there was no mistake the cops were coming.
"We need to get her into the canal right now." Derek jumped out of the back and lifted Esa out of the van along with him. Brie picked up a section of her long tail and they moved with quick little steps toward the water.
"Hurry." Esa breathed. Derek and Brie set her down on the rough concrete at the top of the canal, it slopped steeply down to the welcoming seawater below. "It will hurt, but you'll have to slide down." Derek said, his tone sounding genuinely apologetic. Esa looked up at his face, Brie beside him, "I can do it." She said with certainty. If this is what it's going to take to be free, I will do it. Esa rolled her long body down the side and gritted her teeth as the rough stone scraped her skin and scales.
But she breathed a gasp of joy and relief as the water touched her parched and scraped skin, she leaned back and ducked her head under, staying in that wonderful moment for only a second before realizing she was still in danger. They all were.
"Amber!? Why aren't the bars lifting!?" Brie was shouting as Esa resurfaced, her tail hit the bottom of the canal, so she moved towards the large, thick bars blocking her way out to sea.
"I don't know!" Came Amber's frightened and pressured wail. Suddenly a loud motor roared and the bars lifted slightly. "It's working! Keep doing what you're doing Amber!" Esa shouted over the sound. Suddenly three police cruisers screeched around the corner and stopped suddenly.
"Run! Run!!!!!" Esa screeched, Brie and Amber took off running straight towards a darkened alley, their hair flying out behind them. I'm on my own now. Esa thought, glancing back at the gate. Luckily the bars were still moving slowly but steadily upwards.
The doors of the police cruisers slammed open and two men in uniform took off after Brie and Amber, pelting down in the direction they had run. Wait, where's Derek. Esa swiveled her head around, searching for him.
"Stop!" A rough voice shouted at her, Esa looked back and saw four police officers advancing forward, one was armed with a tranquilizer gun, he raised it towards Esa and closed one eye, aiming straight for her blue shimmering tail.
Fear drove Esa's movements and she dove frantically under the gate, she heard a sharp 'pop' as the officer fired his weapon at her. Something shot into the water, just grazing her shoulder. Why didn't he hit me!? Esa glanced back and saw Derek leaping into the water after her. The police officer had missed because Derek had stopped him.
Esa turned back and grabbed ahold of Derek's arm, pulling him through the gate and out to sea.
I really hope you all have enjoyed this story. It will be ending soon and will actually be the first story I have ever completed through. I know this book has been short. But I hope you all think it to be well written and described. Please give me any feedback you feel necessary, as I want to be a better writer.
I am planning on writing a new story soon! However I'm not quite sure what to call it, or if I'll even go through with it. That depends on how much you all liked this book. Thank you for reading Ocean's Secret. I hope you enjoy the upcoming last chapter! <3
