I am racing, running, fleeing. I'm fighting against the beast that Nature was so willing to give me. I have always been alone, running, fleeing. It was what I did to survive. Something seems different about this chase though, this game of tag. I tried to think about it, but my thoughts kept straying to the chase. I heard a loud hiss behind me and I knew that my pursuer had stopped. I put on a burst of energy and curled up in the hollow of a tree. It was the only slightly hidden spot. I would stay in it for now, because soon the beast would continue its pursuit.

I heard an angry yowl and knew that the beast was on my tail again. I jumped to the ground and answered the wail with a howl of my own before racing off. I knew I couldn't run forever. My chest ached, my side hurt, it was difficult to breath. I slow for a moment as I reach a canyon that overlooks a river. On the other side of the canyon, there is a rock that jutted out from the side, and there stood the beast that had been chasing me. A Cougar. I growled and raised my hackles. The fur along my neck bristled. The cougar pounced and landed on my back. It dug its sharp claws in to get a grip, but I countered its attack. I rolled over, smashing the cat against the ground. I heard a muffled meow and I jumped up and glared at the cat before lunging. I sunk my sharp teeth into its neck and gripped its shoulders with my claws. My opponent screeched in pain before using its large paws to scratch me across the face. I released my grip with a yelp of pain. I winced before staggering to my feet again. I leaped onto the Cougar's back and it roared in anger. It threw me off and grabbed me by the scruff of my neck, and then slammed me into a tree.

I laid there, dying. My breath came in short shallow gasps, my whole body aching. Blood oozed fromthe many wounds all over me. I winced in pain as I rolled over to look at thesky. After all I have been through, I am glad this is how my life ended.Instead of running like a coward, I died fighting as a hero. I looked up at thesky and saw the moon. The dark sky, and the bright moon. I whined as I saw thecougar came lose to me. It bit my wounded leg and drug me to the canyon edge. Then, it knocked me over the side. The last thing I saw was the smiling moonand the darkness of the night.
