I sat there in the restaurant, waiting for my boyfriend to show up. I have been waiting here for half an hour, and I am starting to think that maybe he wasn't just stuck in traffic. The waiters look at me with pity each time they come to ask if I am ready to order, and each time I respond with the same answer: "Sorry, but not yet I'm waiting for my someone." How could he do this? It was his favourite restaurant, he picked the place and time, and still he isn't here. I grab my phone out of my purse and text him.
"Where are you?"
No response.
1 minutes passes.
5 minutes pass.
people are staring.
10 minutes pass.
15 minutes pass.
And I hear the sound of someone sitting down on the chair in front of me. I look up from my phone, and I don't see the man I was expecting the one with green eyes and dirty blonde hair, and a permanent smirk on his face. Before me, I see a man with blue eyes and dark brown hair, with a shy smile resting on his lips.
"Sorry I'm late babe, traffic was hell and my mom just wouldn't get off the phone! I promise it won't happen again!" He said it loud enough that the people around us stopped looking at me with pity, before whispering "Just go with it. I'm so sorry your date stood you up, let me buy you a meal so that you aren't stuck waiting around for someone who won't come. My name is Chance."
I sat there and just nodded, finally accepting the fact that he wasn't coming. I was just about to thank Chance when the waitress came around. She gave him a disapproving look before forcing a smile on her face and asked what we would like to order.
"Can I have the spaghetti with water please?" I ask as politely as I can, before Chance asks for the same thing I am having, except instead of water he gets a coffee.
"Coming right up! My name is kate by the way. The refreshments will be over in a minute!" She is gone before I can even say thank you.
"So, what is your name?"
"Rose" I reply quickly. Might as well answer his questions, he is buying me lunch.
"What are your hobbies?"
"Martial arts, shooting, and writing." I say after a moment of thought.
"What about you?"
He sits there for a moment in shock. He probably didn't expect my answer. He was probably waiting for 'dance', or 'yoga', but I just don't get the same rush in those as I do in martial arts and shooting. It's fun, and I enjoy it.
"Wow. I didn't expect that. Ummmm. I don't do much. I collect things, I hang out with friends, um, like, yeah."
We continued asking each other questions about each other, getting to know each other, and by the time the meal came we knew each other fairly well. He was a little awkward, and fidgeted with his hands a lot, but he stuttered less and less the more we talked. By the time we finished our meals I found out that we had a lot of similar interests Tv show and book wise, and I knew a lot of other things, like that his favourite animal is a snake, he prefers the park to a beach, he likes Supernatural and House M.D, he works at the little flower shop around the block, and as the conversation progressed he stated that his favourite colour was 'the colour of my eyes', and when I rolled my eyes he said "I'm kidding. Red. Although I'm not saying that your eyes aren't the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen" with the shyest smile I had ever seen. I was probably blushing so much. When the bill came he insisted that he would pay, and after he paid he took my hand and lead me out of the restaurant. I didn't even realize the time until I looked down at my Phone. It was 5 pm. It was early December, and usually, the Canadian winter would be upon us, it was certainly an unusual winter, and it didn't drop below 15 °C, so when the sun was up it was still warm enough to wear a spring dress, but darkness had already ascended, and the wind bit at my exposed legs. And I didn't have a ride home.
"Do you need a ride home? I can drop you off if you want."
Could I really trust him? I only just met him today, I shouldn't be getting into strangers cars, and I could probably walk home. But he seemed so... Normal. He didn't seem like a threat. I put a smile on my face and said "Sure".
Little did I know, that was the biggest mistake of my life.
