Jonathon took Marrissa home that night, but not the way she expected.
When they got to the garage-" We dont walk everywhere you know." He said at her expression- Marrissa was surprised at what was in there.
Automobiles, and motorcycles. Things from her history text book. She had seen the pictures. They still had them of course, but they ran on solar energy and at night you rode your bike. It saved energy and the obesity rate was way down. Or you could take the subway at night which was charged up during the day ran on electric batteries at night. Plus the cars they had now hovered. No more traffic problems. Thinking these cars were for collecting, she looked for the more modern cars.
"What are you looking for?" Jonathon asked.
"A modern car."
He laughed, then catching her expression laughed harder. "Whats so funny?" She demanded, as she certainly had not told a joke.
"We dont have any. We use these cars, and motorcycles." He said chuckling.
"But...they are outlawed. They pollute the air and-"
"Well its all we could get our hands on. And besides, aren't we on the other side of things now anyway? Come on." He had stopped laughing and climbed on what Marrissa recognized as a Harley Davidson. Jonathon tossed her a helmet, and she climbed on, making sure her helmet was in place. "Oh no! Its almost curfew!" She exclaimed looking at her watch. The city had a curfew for people 16 and under, which was 9:00. It was 8:30 now.
"Hold on." Jonathon said revving the bike. Marrissa buried her head in his leather jacket, which smelled of soap and dirt and a bit of cologne, and they sped into the night. They made it as her watch hit the 8:59 mark and Marrissa hopped off the bike onto the concrete parking lot of her apartment complex. She had only went a few feet when Jonathon called back to her.
"Yes?" She asked.
"I said you forgot to give back the helmet." He said smiling.
"Oh." She went to him, fumbling with the straps. He sighed and pulled her to him, undoing the straps. As his left hand took off the helmet he let the right hand fall to her shoulder. Her eyes met his and for a moment she felt a wierd fluttering in her stomach. Blushing, she pulled away. "Thank you for bringing me home." She said breathlessly
As she turned, Jonathon caught her arm. "Marrissa....," he looked down," goodnight."
Then, as if by some wild impulse, Marrissa placed a light kiss on his cheek, having to tiptoe just a bit. "Good night." She whispered, then rushed up the stairs to her apartment.
