Gabriel Lunes has never been the beholder of intimacy, a fancy way of saying he's never been in a relationship.

"You need to expand your outlook, focusing on this 'Eliot' guy has limited your view. There's plenty of other fish in the sea, Gabs."

Nessa was right, and Gabriel knew it. However, he didn't want to be with anyone else. Eliot was perfect in every way in his eyes, no one could meet the same standards.

He glanced at the analog clock on his bedside table, 4 in the morning. Sleep has been increasingly harder to achieve these days. No matter how many sleeping pills his mother tries to shove down his throat - much to his father's opposition - it never works. He has a hereditary immunity to most medication.

He rolled over. Why can't I just be normal? He thought.

_____________

Gabriel awoke to the sound of muffled screams. He jumped out of bed in an instant, running out of his room to see what was going on.

"Get over it Jeff, you'll never change! You fucked those other women, men even; you disgust me! Get out, GET OUT!!" Janine Lunes-Madrid, Gabriel's mother, was a devout Christian woman. She doesn't believe in gay marriage; and June 26th is the most hated day in her heart, I'm sure you know why.

"Oh bite me Jan, I never cheated on you!" Martin Lunes is Gabriel's father. He's an in-the-closet bisexual, although he did tell Gabriel about it. He wanted Gabriel to know that he'd be able to tell him if he was gay. Although he never could.

His father was always more understanding of Gabriel's feelings, he never put him down. He never told him to man up, or that he was a baby. His mother on the other hand, was the one who would smack him if he cried when he fell down, or beat him if he didn't do something right. Although Gabriel was quite a buff young man, his mother always told him he was nothing but a little girl in a pair of canvas shoes. She'd say, "When will you change out of your dress and put on a real pair of pants?"

He watched as his dad slammed his suitcase down in front of her. "If I'm leaving, I'm taking MY son with me!" He started for the stairs before she grabbed him and yanked him back.

"You're not taking Gabriel. I'll report him missing and you'll go to jail!" Her face was red by now, veins were popping out of her neck.

"He's my son! I'm not leaving him with an abusive mother, he doesn't deserve to live like this!"

"Oh, and be babied by his daddy? I don't think so!" He ignored her and stomped in Gabriel's direction. "You know no one will believe you! Everyone believes the woman first!" She screamed after him in a failed attempt at winning the argument.

Gabriel hurried back in his room and began packing a bag as quickly as he could. He'd rather leave with his dad any day of the week rather than be here. His dad ran hastily into the room and locked the door. "Gabe, pack quickly, please, I know you heard. I'm so sorry son." He said as he pressed his back against the door, which was almost jolting out of the hinges as she was pounding the hell out of it with her fists.

He remained silent as he grabbed his phone charger. In seconds he got his bag zipped, and already had a hoodie pulled over his head.

His dad staggered forward as the door slammed open and fell, multiple holes in the area she was punching. He grabbed her in a tight hug to block her from hitting him. "Run to the car Gabriel, GO! If I don't come out in 5 minutes, drive!"

He could only nod as he bolted towards the door, diving into the car and locking all of the doors in case his mother was the first to come out. Tears were streaming down his face.

4 minutes.

3 minutes.

2 minutes.

1 minute.

Gabriel warily looked at his phone as five minutes passed. He was about to start the car when his dad comes out, covered in his own blood. He's running from her, she has a knife in her hands and blood splattered on her face. He throws himself into the driver's side, slamming his foot on the gas pedal. She chased after them for awhile, before she fell back.

We drove and drove until we were out of gas.
