I sat in front of the TV, desperately waiting with my family for lottery numbers to be called. We never expected to win, we just liked to play. The news came back and the lady popped one ball up from the number machine to announce the winner of $1.4 billion. First number, 4. So far we're in. She talked for a minute and pulled the chrome lever again. Second number, 4, again. We're actually in.
"Charlotte do you think we'll win?" with a glow of hope in her eyes, my mother asked my aunt.
"Becky these things are just ol' scams anyhow," she replied doubtfully. My mom crossed her arms and shot her a glare.
Another pull of that shiny lever, and third number....6. I looked back at my dad who was scrutinizing his powerball ticket.
"We're in for a small ride at the moment Becky," smirking at my mom. She just smiled back.
Alright fourth number. This is where my family normally strikes out and says the good old, "well, there's always next time aye?" But I could tell my dad looked, and felt, different about this drawing. This was the most money a powerball had ever been. $1.4 million, can you imagine what you'd do with all that money?
Fourth number, 2. I turned to my dad, still examining the pathetic piece of paper with cheap ink printed onto it.
"We're still hot Becky! I got a feeling!" he shouted, waving the ticket through the air. My mom chuckled and rolled her eyes; she continued talking to Charlotte. I watched the lady babble on TV. Just get to the drawing already, that's the reason we're all watching your dumb program.
Another pull of the lever and, 9. I listened for a sigh, or a wail, or a classic "well, there's always next time aye?" but none of that happened. I looked up at my dad who was smiling. How were we still in!?
Next number was launched, 1. Again no sigh, wail, or classic saying. My dad sit there smiling. Could we actually gave a chance at winning? Stop getting your hopes up Rachel. Second to last number, 7. Still no sigh, or any of the above. I was beginning to have a bit of hope.
Last number. The lever was pulled and a ball was sucked down from the machine. They revealed it and there it sit, ball 4. The winning ticket was 44629174. I didn't hear anything. I just stayed facing forward. Where was the reaction? Didn't we lose like every time? Could we have...no. I don't believe it for a minute.
"Dad," I said and slowly turned around. My dad sit on the couch shaking. He showed me the ticket and I snatched from his hands, reading the numbers off. 44629174...they matched up. We had won.
"Da- dad.....," I stuttered. "You won." He still shook in shock.
"No," he said stopping. "We." He stood up on the couch and began yelling. "BECKY!! WE DID IT, WE ACTUALLY DID IT!" He said as my mom's jaw dropped. I never knew what we'd do if we won the lottery....I guess now we'll figure it out.
