As a boy walks with his companion, they walk in silence as always instructed. You were assingned a companion at birth. Sometimes they were killed or lost, but you didn't get a replacement. You went on living.
The boy being only around the age of ten. Was smaller than most at his age. While most we getting to be around four ten, he was only about four seven. He gad black hair, which was often forbidden in the community. A genetic flaw, the sole reason he was allowed to live was because the elders permitted it. He was told he was lucky. Most like him were sent away. Away to another society he'd been told; one where they belong.
He was a lengthy kid. Kind of scrony actually. He had a decent build for a scrony kid though. It was from working on the farms he guessed. Up until you were the age of thirteen you worked in the feilds. Boys did the hard work like planting and harvesting. While the girls did other things, speaking of others roles was forbidden.
As the companions walked down the street they turned the corner, and into their house. Companions were to live in the same house, alone after age 5. Seeing as they could take care of themselves by then. As their schedule for the day continued, the girl went and cooked dinner while the boy relaxed. It was a warm day. They had both met up on their way to their house.
"Alec, tonight i shall cook beans and vegetable burgers. With an acompaniment of coffee and pineapple." Maria said in her rather high voice, she was still young. So her squeak was a normal part of her voice.
"That will do, Maria, and do not forget to run those letters in to the port."
She came into the room and leaned against the wall. "Of course, i was going to start to cook then put it in the port." She gave him a look of displeasement. "You should go take a shower, you are not of adiquit hygene. You'll have the RSE on you."
RSE, the residential service enforcers. They were serious people, genetically altered to work. Enfocing hygene, rules and other important things like curfew. Yet the most intriguing thing is, they are always watching.
"Yes, i suplose you're right." Am act of defiance was not a good idea. People considered defiance the same as an act of stupidity, you were often dissmissed because of it. He thought just about how secrective his society really was. One step out of line was an automatic dissmissment. He wondered why his mind kept straying to these thoughts latley. Perhaps other were having the same thoughts too. Weren't they?
He wasn't sure. He knew he shouldn't ask, it might scare someone. Could he be turning? When people turned they were sent away. The thought frightened him. After debating silently for a little bit, he decided he better not say anything.
After getting up, Alec went to his room to grab clothes for a shower. Then to his bathroom. Where he stepped in to the showers. Which were automatic. He was cleaned then he got out and changed.
Later he had gone downstairs. Supper had just been set onthe table. The two of them sat down and ate in silence and like most nights, the food was good. After supper the table was cleared and the dishes done. And they lay down to sleep.
In their bed they laid shoulder to shoulder. Quietly whispering; so as not to be heard by those of the peeping night.
"Alec, i..." she whispered and choked "i think I'm going crazy. I've started opening my mind to different ways of thinking. I feel as if my world is being turned sidways." She talked with a sadness few could get, understand. She always knew the best way to talk he thought. But what was she talking about. She had still been looking at the ceiling, but now she turned her eyes to me. " I don't understand, do you?"
I was baffled, not only did she share my thoughts but also opinions on the matter. She could get in major trouble. They could take her away. My mind finally stared racing. Should i tell her my thoughts? Im not sure. We couldbe caught.
His thoughts were interrupted when the bells rang. They rang signifying they should be going to sleep. My response to her was lost. As we were swept into a deep sleep.
