“What do you mean by called for? That doesn’t make sense..” I said, partly speaking to myself at the last part. “Well… the king has ordered you to marry..” “What do you mean by ‘marry’? I’m too young to marry!” I shouted, interrupting him. “Before you start asking questions, let me explain. Every once and a while, the king assigns one of the young men who live in or was born in the kingdom to marry a certain girl that was born here too. Well, I was assigned to marry… to marry you.” He said quietly at the last part. “What, so I have to marry you? Wait, you said a girl that was born here… I cannot be born here! I’ve lived in the same place my whole life!” I said, super confused. “Actually… you were born here. But…” he stopped in the middle of the sentence. “But what?” I asked. “But… you’re an orphan. You parents were murdered when you were a baby. That’s why you were brought to earth and adopted by the people who raised you.” He said with a sad tone. It felt like my heart was breaking.. so the people who I thought were my parents weren’t… I was an orphan, and my parents were murdered. I kept repeating that in my mind, hoping it wasn’t true but knowing it was. My eyes were starting to tear up, I stood up and walked into the gazebo, not wanting to be by anyone. I started at the ground, feeling worthless and dead inside. “I’m sorry, Danielle.” He said standing beside me. “For what? You had nothing to do with it. Just.. leave me alone. I don’t want to talk to you or anyone!” I shouted, feeling tears run down my cheeks. “Dani-“ he started saying, but I cut him off. “Just go! Please…” I said. I laid my head on the railing, not caring if he left or not anymore. “I can’t be born here. I can’t be an orphan. The people who raised me are my parents…” I said in denial. I lifted my head and slumped down to the floor, bringing my legs in to lay my head on them. It seemed like hours passed until I felt someone pick me up and carry me inside, half awake and half asleep. I fell back to sleep by the time I was in my new room. I woke up an hour later, finding no one in the room. I sat up, then remembered what I was told. I felt more tears slide down my face, but decided I had to be strong. I got up and went to the bathroom to wash my face. My eyes were slightly red from all the crying I did earlier. I heard a loud knock on the bedroom door and heard it open. “Danielle?” A voice called. I walked out of the bathroom seeing Michael. “Um.. hi..” I said quietly. I looked to the floor, looking at the marks on the wooden floors. “There’s dinner in the dining hall if you’re hungry.” he said, sounding like he didn’t know what to say. “Ok….” I mumbled, still looking at the floor. “Danielle, just come. It will help you forget.” He said. I looked at him and said, “Forget? Forget that my parents were murdered, forget that the people who raised me lied, forget that you brought me to this stupid place against my will, and forget that I have to marry you!?!” I shouted, feeling outraged. I clenched my hands in fists and flopped down on the bed with a sigh. “Umm, well… I guess.” He said. I sat up fast and stared at him. “Go. Go now. Go and leave me alone…” I muttered. After he left, I buried my face in the pillow. My life was crumbling around me.
