I had invited Abby over to my house, my best friend. To be honest, Abby was the only friend I had.
As I stood in front of the mirror, pulling my long blonde hair into a ponytail, I started to notice the small differences in me.
My skin was more cleaner, my chest more prominent and my overall figure more...womanly. Back when I was thirteen I was the really skinny blonde girl in class but now that I was sixteen, I wasn't so skinny anymore.
My mother had told me that I'd see some changes in my figure soon. She called them womanly curves.
"Womanly curves, huh?" I murmured, turning around to get a good look at my behind in the mirror. Yep, my chest wasn't the only thing that was growing.
I hadn't really noticed these changes before because I seldom looked at myself. I knew that I wasn't one of the prettiest girls in school and that's why I rarely looked in the mirror. But to be fair, I wouldn't say that I'm the ugliest person either.
My green eyes were practically a gift to me from my mother and I thought that they were my best feature. My skin was naturally smooth and I had inherited my father's straight nose. Some of my cousins have called me pretty but I suppose they must since I'm family.
Now that I looked at myself closer, I had to admit that I was pretty decent. Why hadn't I noticed that before?
Maybe it was because of my rectangular glasses that seemed to put a shade over my green eyes. I never really liked them but I was too afraid to try contacts. I have seen my mother put contacts and it looks weird and painful.
I was about to take off my glasses when I heard the doorbell ring.
I stepped away from the mirror as I heard my mother opening the front door and letting Abby in.
I walked to my bedroom door and pulled it open. Abby smiled and waved at me, her red hair falling just below her shoulders.
"Hi, Perry," she greeted me, her dimples visible.
"Hey!"
"You girls stay out of trouble, okay?" My mom winked at us, her blonde hair slowly growing silver.
"Sure, Mom," I said, opening my door further to let Abby in. After nodding towards my mother, Abby walked inside and I closed the door.
I wasn't sure why Abby and I were friends. It seemed like we had nothing in common and yet, she seemed to be enjoying spending time with me. I felt the same way too but sometimes I feel like she's a bit superior to me. There are times when I feel like I don't compare to her and I'm intimidated.
Abby was one of the cool kids in school. With her perky and curious personality, people liked being around her. She was good with everyone. She had friends and I didn't. And sometimes, when she'd pick me over them, I'd feel somewhat proud and glad.
She made herself comfortable on my bed and I joined her, sitting near her feet. Abby started to talk about this other girl in class whose boyfriend recently broke up with her when she told him that she'd been cheating on him with another girl.
"And Alexa doesn't regret telling him one bit. She told me that he was quite rude to her sometimes."
"Wow..." I shook my head. "Who'd knew that Alexa would be into girls, right?"
