Book 1: The Avatar and the Firebender
Chapter 1
Jeffta dodged the water quickly. She could have easily bended it back to her but she had to protect herself from her sister and mother of knowing her secret. Jeffta sent a fist to the air and a ball of purple fire was sent to her sister.
Someone, not her sister, extinguished the fire. Jeffta turned around to see Pakku. Pakku was the water bender master of the tribe. He always refused to teach women but being Jeffta's and her sister's grandfather, he made an exception for the firstborn. Which of course wasn't Jeffta.
"Grandfather" Jeffta almost spat the word at him.
"Jeffta, child. Don't be stupid. Quit all this and we'll go back to normal" Pakku said awfully calm.
"Normal?! What do you call normal?! You want us to go back to where I was the useless non bender of the family? Where I was the outcast? No! I've had enough of it! Guess what? I am a bender. Just not a water bender" Jeffta said firmly for the first time in her twelve years of life.
Her grandfather shifted his position. Jeffta had seen him water bend enough times to know he was preparing for a fight. She knew she couldn't win against him but Jeffta would not surrender without giving out a fight.
Pakku made the first move, he was firm on his medium section but swift in his arms. He raised a big bubble of water which he divided, with the small bubbles, he made small iced blades and threw them at his granddaughter. Jeffta dodged or moved aside from the blades.
Even though Jie, Jeffta's twin sister, disliked her sister and wanted to see her impaled by one of her grandfather's blades, she had to admit, that Jeffta moved gracefully across the iced field, moving between the blades, almost as if it was a dance for her.
And in fact, it was a dance for Jeffta. She felt as flying, and almost as if the blades moved at slow speed. Only one blade was near her enough to cut her coat's sleeve.
The blades stopped coming and Jeffta smirked with sufficiently at herself. Even though her family wasn't proud of her, she was. She had achieved so much in so little time. She had stopped envying her perfect sister and began being proud of herself. Then was when she found out she could fire bend and do other things. Unlike any other fire she had ever seen, hers was a bright purple.
Pakku moved a foot through the snow before rising a blast of water with calm, as if he wanted to see Jeffta's reaction. But he wasn't looking at Jeffta, but at Jie, worried about his granddaughter. He moved his hand to the back and raised his leg. Jeffta had seen this before, a whip. Pakku was so immersed in his favourite granddaughter that he didn't notice Jeffta copying each of his movements but using fire instead. Right when she got her hand to the back, she flung it forward and the fire flew from her hand to collide with Pakku's chest.
Jie gasped in surprise as her grandfather fell to the ground. The older sister ran to her grandfather's aid as Jeffta only stared with hatred at them. Her fists clenched with fire around them.
Jie was older than Jeffta by an hour, making them be born in different days. Jeffta had always been smaller than Jie, making everyone think she was weak, she almost didn't survive, but her father always told her that a spirit touched her and saved her. Her father told Jeffta that she was a gift from the spirits, that she was the most important person in the world and that one day she'd change the world. It was one thing he never said to Jie. Their mother was a totally different story, she always thought her daughters would be great water benders but at first, Jeffta gave no sign of being a bender. When they were ten, Jie was already a pro in water bending and still Jeffta didn't bend. Then her father was recruited to fight in the war and they hadn't heard of him since.
