Prologue

"Mummy? What's going on?" I mumbled sleepily, rubbing my eyes with my small fists. I stood in the bedroom doorway, in nothing but my nightie and slippers. My worn teddy bear lay limp in one arm while my soft pink blanket was curled around the other. I still wore the pig tails that my mother had made in my hair only a few hours ago, before I went to bed.

Ignoring my question, I watched her frantically shove clothes into a black canvas backpack. Her movements were sharp and quick as she stuffed item after item into the bag. She thrust several more clothes into the pack before zipping it shut, reaching under the bed and pulling out a second bag.

She froze suddenly, her hands poised in the air as a stream of muttered curse words left her mouth. Not a second later, loud banging and shouts echoed through the house, making the walls and floor boards quake. The noise was coming from the front door down stairs and had me wide awake, shaking in fear.

"Mummy!" I screamed, suddenly terrified.

My mother ran towards me and scooped me into her arms. Her slim hands gently cradling my head, wiping away the stray droplets of water that had managed to escape my eyes. She knelt on the floor beside my bed. Unshed tears rimmed her eyes while she stroked my hair and leant down to kiss my forehead softly.

"Hailey baby, its important that you do what I'm about to say." She mumbled into the top of my hair.

The banging and shouting got louder until it felt as though the sounds were suffocating me. Growls and roars of fury ripped through the air around the house causing terror filled shivers to run up and down my spine. Carefully, she laid me down on the floor and pushed me underneath the bed, peeking under the bed sheet to whisper to me.

"I need you to stay quiet, baby. You can't make a single sound. Do you think you can do that for me?" She sounded so weak, so helpless. She didn't sound anything like my mother. My mother was a strong, beautiful woman full of pride and joy. I was certain the broken voice I was hearing didn't belong to her.

I nodded my head and curled into a small ball, wrapping my blanket tightly around me. My mother stretched her arm out towards me, smoothing my hair once more.

"I'm so sorry baby. I wish I could watch you grow up, but I can't. Be a good girl. Both your father and I, love you Hailey. Don't you ever forget that." Silent tears dripped from her blueish grey eyes and splashed against her cheeks.

"I love you too mummy." I whispered back.

She jumped up quickly, letting the bed sheet drop and pushed the wooden dresser in front of the door as a barrier. I could see her shadow against the white sheet and watched her silhouette stand stiffly in the middle of the room, waiting.

With a deafening smash, I heard the wood of our front door splinter. The vicious snarls grew closer and heavy footsteps thundered up the stairs. The sound of slamming doors ricocheted off the walls as the intruders searched every room.

When they reached the room we were in and realised the door was stuck, the banging began again. It didn't take as long this time for them to break the door down. Maybe only a minute or two and wooden splinters littered the wooden floor boards. The dresser remained in place so the strangers were forced to climb over it, in order to enter the room. They crowded into the small space, standing in a circle bordering the bed room walls.

"Emaliee, what a pleasure it is to finally meet you." A deep voice said.

The heels of large dark boots were all I could see through the sheet. Someone was standing at the foot of the bed, effectively blocking off my view.

"Nothing to say? Hmmm, I believe your 'mate' said you were quite the chatter box. Why so silent?" The voice continued. After a long pause my mother responded.

"What are you doing here?"

"Oh, you don't know? You and your mate," He spat the word with so much disgust, it made me cringe. "committed a very serious crime. Love between humans and...the supernatural is against the law with a penalty of death. I am rather happy to say that your mate has successfully fulfilled his part of the penalty. Now its your turn."

A strangled sob left my mothers mouth and she fell on her knees. Daddy was gone? Only hours ago I had sat on his lap while he read me a bedtime story and then tucked me into bed. Only hours ago he was telling me all about how great my first day at school would be and all the friends that I was going to make. He can't be gone!

Laughter erupted from several of the men standing in the room and I heard a loud, prominent click that had my mother gulping.

"I'm going to be cliche and ask: any last words?" Another round of laughter sounded in the room making my stomach churn in hatred.

Through the sheet I saw mums head lift and stare the intruder right in the eyes. She was filled with too much pride to beg for her life, yet at that very moment, I wished with all my heart that she would. Her voice was calm, deadly and promising as she spoke her next words.

"Go. To. Hell."

Seconds before the shot was fired, a hand enclosed around my ankle dragging me from my hiding place. My mothers scream echoed and the sound of gun fire filled the air.

Authors Note

Hey fellas,

So this is a remake of my first book 'Teach Me To Love'. I hated that book with a burning passion even though it was my own. Don't worry guys, it has been deleted! :) No more poorly written chapters from a soppy, cheesy, don't know did-a-lee squat teenager.

I will warn you in advance that I'm no professional writer. I'm simply a 14 year old girl who loves to read and write, so I apologise if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes. Please let me know if there are any, so that I can fix them.

Another advanced warning: I am a HUGE procrastinator and live a busy life so updates will be slow. I am sorry! If I take way too long and don't give you a reasonable excuse, hassle the living daylights outta me until I update. 'kay?

Also, if any of you think that this was a bit to dramitic and dark for a prologue, don't worry. I kinda, maybe, sorta know what I'm doing.

Now the cover...

I asked two people if they would make a cover for me and I was amazed when they actually did. I literally jumped on my bed screaming and started singing High School Musical! (Don't worry guys, my parents already think I'm mental so this wasn't out of the ordinary.)

This chapter is dedicated to @Zombiefied because she was kind enough to make me not only one, but TWO covers! If that isn't dedication worthy then I don't know what is. Seriously guys, go look at her page! She is hilarious and has the cutest smiley face designs.

@CaptainHope also made me a cover which will be up in the next chapter, hopefully. (The next chapter will also be dedicated to her!)

Feel free to tell me what you think about the story. Should I continue this book? Was it too boring and plain? Any improvements needed?

If you enjoyed it please vote, comment and fan! I will try to re-comment (not sure if that's even a word).

Dat's me peeps! Over and out!

-Ash
