This first chapter is based almost wholly on the music video (except for the end part) but the further I get into the story the more things will change. This will be posted on Wednesdays unless something comes up and I really hope you like it! Also, i'm going to vidcon this year so let me know if you'll be there too!!

Shane wasn't sure what to say, he was scared and angry but he was just a kid and there was no way for him to change any of the horrible things that were happening because he promised joey he wouldn't tell anyone so he focused on carving their initials into the tree because that was something he could protect... his friendship with his best friend. He turned around and noticed that Joey was rubbing the bruises on his arm, "Are you okay?" Shane asked quietly, trying not to startle the boy. Joey and Shane had always been best friends, their parents had been neighbors since before they were born and they had spent all of their time together growing up. He believed in the strength of their friendship because it had lasted twelve long years... even if like five of those were baby years... but there would never be a Shane without Joey or a Joey without Shane.

"I hate her" said joey and the venom and heartache in his voice made Shane want to cry, he hated hearing how upset this whole thing made Joey. There was nothing he wanted more than to tell his mom what was going on so that she could do something and get joey away from his horrible life but joey didn't want that, he didn't want the attention that was sure to be drawn if he said anything to anyone so Shane tried his hardest to make the situation better. He knew exactly what Joey was going through... his dad had done the same to him for so long but he had finally gotten tired of torturing them and moved out one day while everyone had been at work and at school taking a lot of their money with him.

"But she's your mom." said Shane, he knew just as well as anyone what it was like to have a bad home life and sometimes when things got especially hard he did his best to remember that his mom had told him that everything happened for a reason. He wasn't quite sure what that reason was or why God or whoever would want to punish him and joey but he did know that that belief had gotten him through so many nights of feeling terrible about himself and the things going on around him so he would hold onto it until he had a reason to let it go. As much as he hated what his dad had done to him and to his family he had never truly hated his father.

"I know" joey whispered, voice barely there as he continued to trace feather light touches across his bruised arms. Shane wished that he could take the pain away for even a second, just to bring back the smiling happy Joey that he had come to love as they grew up. It hadn't always been this horrible, there had been a time where their families had been so close that Shane and Joey spent so much time together that they began to worry when they were apart but all of that changed when both Joey's mother and Shane's father hit a rough patch in their lives and began to spiral out of control. Joey's father had left so his mother turned to alcohol just like Shane's father had when he lost his first job in a string of many. Shane hated even thinking about all of the things that he and Joey had been through but he hoped that he had one way of making his friend smile.

"Joey, I got you something" Shane pulled the gift out of his pocket, he knew it was kind of lame and girly but when he saw it, it reminded him of Joey right away. He knew that joey had recently gotten into things like crystals and he had started his own collection so even though he didn't really understand what the appeal of the shiny jewel was he knew that it could possibly make his friend smile so he saved up all of the change he found for two months and used the coinstar machine in the grocery store to turn it into dollars. Once he finally found the five dollars he needed he had rushed to the secondhand store and bought the present, making himself feel amazing because he had finally done something nice for his friend and he hadn't had to bother his mom or anyone else to get it. He had done it all on his own.
