Chapter One

"Are you sure this is the place?"

I glanced at the male Guardian next to me. He was staring doubtfully at the darkened window, but I nodded. "Yes. Our intelligence reports saw the Hathaway girl conducting a surveillance round this afternoon."

The guardian snorted. "Clearly not a very effective surveillance round if she didn't see us. It's a wonder they are even alive."

I said nothing, instead moving away from him to better see the window. Undoubtedly luck had played a greater role in their survival than her novice guardian skills, but nonetheless, despite overwhelming odds they were indeed alive.

My height gave me a good vantage point, allowing me to see directly inside. With my superior dhampir sight I was able to pick out the two girls easily enough. They were sleeping, which would make capturing them a simple job. The problem would be the presence of humans in the house. Despite the fact that humans did not operate on a nocturnal schedule like vampires, the guardian I had sent to scope out the house had reported that at least one of the humans was awake in the kitchen, studying apparently.

This made the mission complicated, but certainly not impossible.

My mind began to work on a few possible plans as I continued my surveillance. Some minutes later, I noticed one of the girls began writhing, and I squinted in an effort to see better. Was she having some sort of fit? It would leave us no choice but to enter immediately...

At that moment though, the other girl sat up and turned on the lamp, flooding the room with dim light and allowing me to better identify the girls.

The dark haired girl - Hathaway, I guessed - crossed to the writhing girl - the Princess- who sat up, sobbing, but otherwise okay. I studied the two as they talked quietly. They were a picture of contrasts. Rosemarie Hathaway was a dhampir like myself, half-human, half-vampire,and built like an athlete. Even from here I could tell that she had lost muscle mass compared to the earlier pictures I had been given, but that was to be expected given that she had abandoned her training to enter the human world with the Princess. Why she had done that was a mystery, but judging by the protective stance she took with her charge and best friend, I could only assume it had not have been for some trivial reason. Or so I hoped, as the alternative would not leave a happy future for Hathaway.

The Princess, by contrast, was blonde, and thin like a human model. She was a Moroi - a vampire, and royal at that. The last of the exulted Dragomir line, Vasilissa Dragomir had lost her entire family in a car crash that left her and her best friend Rosemarie alive. And the latter had had a miracle survival by all reports.

Those two must have the favour of the gods on their side, I thought.

Again curiosity filled me as I wondered why they had left, but I suppressed it. I would find out soon enough.

Hathaway was studying the Princess in a way I recognised from guardian training as she checked her health. The Princess looked pale, she probably needed a feeder - another curiosity. How had they managed to remain undetected and get blood for the Princess?

A moment later my question was answered as Hathaway nodded adamantly, her expression determined as she tilted her head toward the Princess. My judgement had been correct - the Princess was hungry - as despite the aversion she had to drinking from her friend she sunk her teeth into Hathaway's neck.
