Changing Fate

I was on my feet, sprinting past the rubble. Dodging and ducking underneath the buildings, weaving my way through the area.
"Teresa! Teresa where are you?" I screamed as I ran, whipping my head back and fourth, scanning far and wide for the bright orange head bobbing around the horizon or hopefully closer.
"Jaelynn? What're you doing- JAE STOP" shouted Carter desperately over my screams, he wasn't far behind me, following in my path. I hadn't told him where I was going or really what I was doing. Other than the fact we needed to find Teresa. But for me its get along with it, asks questions later.
"We have to find Teresa!" I shrieked, as I know the time was slowly ticking down.
"Why? We were ordered to search from the high rise" pointed out Carter. Of course I knew this to be true, but I couldn't care less at this point in time.

Just as I tripped over a camouflaged iron bar and fell face first to the ground, I heard it. A scream like no other.
"Over there" I gasped, pulling my gun to the front of me and loading it. Once again Carter followed, no longer apprehensive or hesitant in following me. He to now knew what I was talking about.
"Teresa! Hold on we're coming" he yelled as we dashed over the hard ground. Finally we saw her, mouth hanging open and eyes wide in fear. Her normally straight and smooth hair was now frizzled and messy, surrounding her face like thick jungle vines.
"Now now Missy, I don't want to draw attention to ourselves. This is just some private time between you and me" hissed a voice from the shadows. Carter and I powered on as he jumped in front of Teresa, checking her for wounds.
"You got Teresa?" I asked, whilst standing in the middle of the court yard.
"I... I just wanted to see the court yard again. This is where I last saw our Mum" whined Teresa as Carter wiped away the blood from the new wound on her stomach.
"Stupid move girl, this is my spot now" snarled the unknown voice.

"Diablo, please.. please just leave me alone" stammered Teresa, choking on her tears.
"There are no if, buts, or maybes in what I do sister. I do what I want and its not going to change just because of you" snapped the voice. Then it hit me, this wasn't some random demon. This was Teresa's younger brother Diablo.
"Fancy seeing you again, Dib" I smirked. I grew up with this kid as he is only one year older than me. You would always see him in the great hall during meals, he was just like his sister. Energetic, happy, and you know... not possessed by a demon.
"The pleasure is mine" he sassed, before bowing sarcastically. He and I were never really close but we were at least acquainted with one another. My vision did show a demon with a knife, and here was a demon. But I couldn't see the knife.
"So, when did you plan on murdering your sister with the blade? I wish you could hurry it up a bit, you know me, tight schedule" I sighed, tapping my watch. However Diablo looked puzzled, even for a demon.
"What? I wasn't trying to kill her, I was planning on torturing her first and then giving her over to the big guy" he explained before continuing, "I didn't even bring a knife, I don't need weapons, I have my mind". He now had the upper hand as I was now wondering down my mind, desperately trying to piece together the vision again to work out where the knife came in. But before I could even recount of the event, another shriek filled the air. I spun around to see Carter drop to his knees and Teresa cover her mouth, muffling her scream only slightly. Then I saw it, a large dark figure, brandishing a knife. Realising what was taking place, I loaded my gun, swung it around to face the guy and shot.

The sound of gun fire erupted into the air, I hear Diablo hiss and dive somewhere else behind me. Then everything moved slow, as if time was coming to a stop. My bullet that was cutting through the air had come to a complete stop just millimetres from the guys back, then it dropped to the ground with a clattering noise.
"Wha...What" I stammered, unsure of what just happened. The guy then let out a deep laugh before turning his head ever so slightly as so I could see a part of his face. To my shock horror, his eyes weren't deep black like the other demons. But instead they were a pure white, nothing else. He let out another drawl of laughter before clicking his fingers and disappearing into thin air.
"Farout!" I yelled in anger, I threw my gun to the ground and kicked the nearest piece of rubble. Whatever that thing was, it got away, and it was my fault for not finishing it off.

After calling in to Haru and the rest of the group, he directed all of us to start heading back to base immediately. We followed he command and slung our guns back over our shoulders. Thankfully in the end, Teresa wasn't the one who got hurt. However, Carter did. He had a huge gash mark on the top of his head. I tied my jumper around his head to stop the bleeding.
"We gotta carry him back" I mumbled to Teresa. She nodded in agreement and we moved over to Carter, picking him up slowly before draping his arm over our backs. We continued on, dragging him along with us. Every now and again you would hear a large groan from Carter, or feel him flinch as we picked him up over the rubble. It was a hard run as part of the journey back to base involved going through the broken down housing section. Which required weaving our way through long, thick overgrown grass and ducking under the fallen bits of concrete. The houses here weren't lovely, they were tall, rectangular and big cement blocks. There were about 16 windows per a house, 2 for each side, 8 for each level.

We carried on in silence, the day slowly passing away to now become late afternoon. We would have been back by now, but we had to keep stopping to make sure Carter was still even breathing.

"Jaelynn... we've been walking for twice as long and we still haven't gotten back yet" whined Teresa, obviously her spirit hadn't lifted yet.
"I know, but we have to help him so just get on with it" I snapped back, the words spilled out of my mouth a bit too quickly and a bit too angrily. "Sorry.." I murmured.
"Its ok, I know what its like to want to save someone. I'll obviously help, but its just taking a while" she replied in a sweeter tone than before.
"Guys... my head hurts" mumbled Carter before groaning again. Teresa and I looked out each other and giggled a bit. His reaction to being hurt was pretty funny, most might suck it up and get on with it, or be moaning and wailing in pain. Whereas Carter sounded like he had a hangover.
"We know Carter, so shutup and we'll get you back to base" giggled Teresa. I shook my head and went along with the joke.
"Ah yes Carter, suck it up sunshine so we can hurry and get back to base. We don't have time to have Haruka yell at us, let alone Jeremy" I chimed in, using the most serious tone I could.
"No! I don't want to be yelled at!" Squealed Carter, he jumped up and start wobbling around aimlessly before collapsing again. "Can you carry me?" he whimpered. Teresa and I smiled before picking him up again and continuing back to base.

It was only a short walk from where we were. Snaking through abandoned buildings and ducking under small shelters at any sign of movement. But eventually we arrived back at base. We shuffled into through the front doors and briskly walked to the hospital ward. Once we arrived, we set Carter down on a bed. I explained to Bitzy, a 29-year-old doctor who always had a helping attitude.
"Ok, so a bit of a slash wound and a few scrapes" chirped Bitzy. I nodded, thanked her and Teresa and I walked out. We entered the main hall again to wrap up with our group.

But the problem was, they hadn't gotten back yet.
