Jasmine's POV

It bothers me how much I feel like I've met Alexander before.

At first, I assumed it was his face. Maybe I had seen him at the mall or the party, maybe on a Christmas card dad got from the hospital. Then I found that it was his personality, not his looks. Something about the nervous way he spoke in his baritone voice reminded me of someone. The way he reached back and rubbed his neck, I just couldn't figure out who and it was killing me.

"Jasmine, have you been ok lately?" My dad poked his head into my room.

"Uh, yeah, why?" Other than the mysterious Alexander, yes, I was doing pretty well.

"Oh," He sat on the edge of my bed. "Ian just said he was worried about you."

I raised my eyebrows at him. "Ian? Ian was worried?"

"He just said that if anything seemed out of the ordinary, I should talk to you. I'm not sure if he was critiquing my parenting skills or something was going on with you."

I feel like Ian knew something I didn't.

"I've been fine, other than my friend leaving town..."

"Your friend? What friend?"

I shook my head. "Al, the one who was hiding in the pantry."

He nodded. "Why?"

I shrugged. "I don't know. He just up and left. I'm thinking his foster parents live somewhere else, that's all."

"Don't you think it's a little weird he left without telling you?"

I shrugged again. "I don't know. Maybe he didn't tell me because of everything that was going on between me and you."

"Oh," He sighed, dejected. "I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry, you were just looking out for me." I only said that to make him feel better. His protectiveness before ticked me off.

"Ok, well I'll leave you to your homework."

He left me and I tried to concentrate on my homework again, but with all of these Al feelings bubbling up inside me I just couldn't.

Why didn't Al ever tell me? Was he nervous what my reaction would be? Did he get sent to jail? All of these theories were giving me a headache, it wasn't my business anyway.

I gave myself a reprieve from homework and spent an hour watching meaningless YouTube videos, and that seemed to get my mind off things.

My phone buzzed on the bed and I jumped from my desk chair and landed on my bed gracefully, checking my text from Alexander.

Look outside

I got up and walked over to my balcony door carefully, hoping there wasn't a SWAT team waiting or something.

I peeked behind the floaty white curtain and saw Alexander standing in my backyard.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, walking to the edge of the balcony.

"Um," He rubbed the back of his neck. "I wanted to show you something."
