CHAPTER ONE

My head slams in the floor from a sudden jump. Pain shoots down my back, and my head throbs. When I try to move my arm, a searing prick goes through my arm that makes me stop.

Looking at my arm, I notice it wrapped in a torn brown gauze. My gaze falls from my arm to the room around me.

My breath hitches as I looked around at the enclosed box. The insides are a rusted old metal with a shinny metal floor.

No windows, no way to get out, no way to get more air.

Another jolt makes the box tip, sending me sliding to the other side, hitting my shoulder on the wall. I let out a muffled yelp when I feel the pain.

I slide to a siting position, ignoring the pain that tells me to stay still.

Just as I was sitting up, the box jolts froward and I fall over onto the floor.

The box come to a halt and all sound is gone, except my heavy breathing. At first it was low, but soon the loud shuffling noise coming from behind fills the air.

I don't turn. A hand grips my arm and yanks me up, causing me to scream in pain.

"Be delicate with her. She doesn't resist pain as much as us," a strong womanly voice says.

Thankfully the tight grip loosens on my arm. The pain makes me so dizzy I feel as if I'm going I faint. My legs give way and I fall toward the floor.

Luckily the firm hands grabs me before my face hits the metal floor. "Hold her. I knew this would happen. All of them are like this. You'll have to help her," the woman states.

I feel an arm slide across my back and under my other arm, holding me up. "She's light," says a low voice in my ear.

"She hasn't eaten in days. This is what I mean. Don't you see it Alec?"

I move my head to look at Alec. "I see it," he says, looking at me.

His eyes are a deep chocolate color. They match his hair, which is straight and stops at his ear but still long enough to flip to the side.

He turns us around to face the woman. She runs before I can see her and we start out I the box.

Immediately when we are out out of the box, I feel better. Alec has to basically carry me down the dim hallway.

There was silence, only the squeak of sneakers heard.

I began to walk, trying to make it easier for him. "Don't hurt yourself," he says, lifting me even more.

He stops and I hear a clicking sound coming from in front of us. There is one lay click as part of the wall slides open.

The small light shines through into the hallway and I get my first look at the woman.

She has long black hair that curls. Her face looks older with wrinkles, and yet young. Her eyes are lively, with striking green color.

She steps boy the room and we follow her, fitting through the doorway. Through the door is a small infirmary type room.

The floor was still concrete and the walls were chipping with an old brown paint. There were at least six to seven beds in the room, each having a table next to it.

"Over here," the woman says, pointing to one of the beds. "I'll go get Shadow."

She leaves through the door was came and Alec leads me over to the bed, gently placing me down.

He awkwardly stood beside me until the woman walks in. Behind her follows another woman, Shadow, I think.

One thing, her name is the complete opposite of her appearance. She has bright blonde hair and pale skin. She wears a brith red shirt and tight white pants. As you can tell, her name is the opposite of her.

She walks over and sits on the table next to the bed. "I'm Shadow." I nod.

She turns to the woman and says, "Are we excepting her? Look at her. He looks like a lost puppy."

"Actually from her profile and tests she has proven herself the most useful here in her sector," Alec interjects.

Shadow nods, understanding. "I was smaller than the others too. But look how I turned out."

Others? Sector? What?

"Will she get the symbol?"

The woman nods. "As everyone else," she says.

Shadow nods, understanding. Stepping off the table and she opens the drawer, sliding out a small blue box.

She places it on the bed beside me. She kneels beside the bed and opens the box, pulling out a needle.

I look over her to see the woman and Alec chatting in the corner, glancing over at me.

"Lay still. This will only hurt a bit," Shadow says, inching the needle closer to my collar bone.
