Plants are living creatures. They can be as large as trees and as tiny algae. There are over 287,655 species of plants.
That's old!
The plant world also includes shrubs and bushes, ferns, mosses, fungi and even some algae. Land plants appeared on Earth around 700 million years ago. As more plants began to grow, they used up more carbon dioxide to make their food by photosynthesis. They also gave out more oxygen, which was necessary for animals to survive.
Fact: We turn the wood from trees into furniture.
Thank you plants!
Everything we eat comes from or relies upon, plants. Sometimes it's indirect, when the animals we eat in turn feed on plants. We eat the seeds of plants like rice and wheat. The roots of potatoes, carrots and radishes make nutritious vegetables. Spices like pepper that flavor our our food comes from plants.
Whats that?
Almost all plants begin from a seed, although some, like ferns, are born from spores. The roots hold the plant firmly to the ground. They also draw up water and dissolved minerals that the plant uses up to make food. The stems hold the leaves, flowers and fruit- the seed of the plant. When the seed falls to the ground, it begins to grow into a new plant.
