~Vanoss and Mini's story~

Fall of the year 2004 (November, around Thanksgiving)

~Vanoss's POV~

'Ahh... The wonderful annual, stuff your face until you can't move, day is here.' I thought as Craig and I were cleaning up the house, 'Every year we normally have like... Two sandwiches and that's what we call a feast. Actually, some are lucky to get one and a half sandwiches.'  I wiped the sweat off my forehead and admired my mop job on the hardwood floor, 'Yup, I'm waiting for it.'

Craig was dusting off old nick-knacks that looked like they belonged in the 80's. Some random little boy came running through and tripped over my mop. He face-planted on the hardwood and immediately  got up like nothing happened.

I smiled and walked over to Craig, "Hey, how long does it take to dust off a couple of antiques?" I asked and chuckled. Craig didn't respond which was weird. He would usually at least give a smile when I cracked a joke. He just ignored me and continued dusting a lava lamp.

"Earth to Craig!" I yelled and waved my hand in front of his face. He just looked my way and sighed, "Yes, Vanoss?" He said my name like he was eating a spoonful of cinnamon. I gave him a concerned look and said, "What's wrong, buddy?" He didn't answer and put down the old feather duster, "I don't wanna talk about it..." Then he walked in the other direction.

I blinked a couple times. My friend is distressed and doesn't wanna talk about it, but we are friends aren't we? So why can't he tell me what's up?

I pouted a little walked in the opposite direction of him.

I will get him to talk.

----

It was getting to be bedtime so I went upstairs early so I was ready for when Craig came up to sleep in his bed. After a couple minutes and a loud shout of, "BEDTIME!" I heard footsteps coming closer to our bedroom door and then is opened revealing Craig, "Hey dude!" I waved as he walked in.

He glanced at me, but then looked down at his feet. He silently got changed into pajamas and climbed into the bed next to mine.

"Craig. Tell me what's wrong." I said flatly, "I don't want to." Craig replied quietly, "Why? Aren't we friends? Can't we tell each other anything?" I asked in a whisper so we wouldn't get yelled at, "We are friends, but this particular thing is something YOU wouldn't understand." He emphasized 'you'. I tilted my head in confusion, "Why? You wouldn't know if you don't tell me." "Yes I do..." That just made me frustrated. Why wouldn't I understand? I could try...

I sighed and gave it up for the night, "Goodnight..." I mumbled and climbed under the covers, "Goodnight..." I heard him mumble. Before we went to sleep I heard the click of my flashlight go on.

----

The next day I woke up to find that Craig has already got up. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Guess we gotta do what we do every year.

I jumped out of bed and put on fresh clothes because I forgot to change into my pajamas last night. I rushed downstairs to search for Craig, but I couldn't find him. I looked in all the rooms possible, but there was no sign of him.

"Ms. Melony!" I yelled and she yelled back, "What!?" "Where's Craig!?" She didn't answer for a few moments then came a, "I don't know! Try checking the park!" I sighed and went out the backdoor and headed to the only park in this neighborhood.

----

When I got there I saw Craig slightly swinging in a swing. I walked up to him and sat in the swing next to him, "Hey Craig." I said softly. I looked at me then at the wood chip ground, "Sorry... About last night..." He said quietly. I smiled, "It's alright! But I still want to know what's the issue with you, and why you did that." Craig stayed silent.

I stayed silent until he spoke. It took a few minutes but I heard him inhale, "I... Just... It's just..." I didn't interrupt, all I did was look at him and wait, "It's just, for the past three years, I've been spending Thanksgiving with my family. This will be the first year of many that I won't..." I smiled and asked, "I don't understand how you thought I wouldn't understand..." He sighed, "You... It's because you..." "Never had a family to spend a holiday with..." He nodded.

I smiled and laughed, "That was all? Really?" He glared at me, but I kept laughing. After a few seconds, he joined in, too. We both laughed until our stomachs hurt. After we calmed down I stood up and held out my hand, "Come on. We have to go volunteer at this homeless shelter. It's to give Ms. Melony a good name." He smiled and took my hand.

We walked back to the orphanage.

----

That night we got back and we were exhausted. I stretched out on my bed and curled into a ball, "I don't wanna get up..." "Same here..." I heard Craig groan. We then heard the familiar, "LIGHTS OUT!" From Melony.

We both climbed under our covers, lazily. When we were comfortable enough, I was ready to sleep. Then a thought hit my mind, "Hey Craig?" He groaned an answer, "Can we promise something else?" He shuffled a little and groaned again, "Can we promise to always tell each other anything, no matter how embarrassing or stupid, or even if we might think the other wouldn't understand?"

There was silence then the click of the flashlight was heard and then it shone towards me. I turned my head to face Craig and he was looking at me, smiling, "I guess... Yeah... We can. No matter how embarrassing or stupid."

I smiled and we tried our best to spit into our hands and shake them, but we were too tired to reach across to each other so we settled for an air shake. Then, we both let the darkness, with the exception of the flashlight, consume us.

----

The next day was Thanksgiving.

All day we cleaned, walked around, stole a couple food items, and then sat around a small table with a couple of children.

Ms. Melony was very pleased with our work from the volunteering, that she gave us all two sandwiches. (Any kind you want them to have xD)

We all sat around the table and gave thanks for everything we have. Thanks for all the little things we had.

But what I gave thanks to the most of all, was having to meet Craig and we became friends.

Of course I didn't say that out loud, but I thought it. And as they say, "It's the thought that counts."

All in all, it was a fantastic Thanksgiving, and even though Craig missed his family, I think he appreciates the one he has right now.
