Wolfie swallowed as she stared at the train in front of her, rumbling and ready to roll out with the hundreds of soldiers on it, eager to serve their country. Most were hugging their families, giving last kisses and hugs before they parted, some even breaking up with somebody as they went, while a few just hopped on swiftly, not even bothering to look back.
Wolfie didn't know if they had family or not, but she wasn't about to ask. Maybe they were doing this to prove something, maybe they just didn't care. It didn't matter to her, but her curiousness made her want to know.
"Doll."
Wolfie looked at the brown haired man, who gave a sideways smile. "You ready? I got some snacks and stuff so we can stuff our faces before we get there." Bucky said, his eyes sparkling with happiness. Wolfie chuckled, resting her hand on his arm. "Ready when you are, Sergeant." She said and he grabbed her hand. "Let's get going then. They need more men out there...well, you know what I mean."
Wolfie rolled her eyes as she was dragged onto the train. Women in skirts and blouses greeted them happily and showed them a few open seats. Bucky pulled her into two seats by the window from where they were originally standing outside.
The train horn blared and the remaining soldiers hopped on as the conductor called for the last on them before disappearing back into the train car.
Wolfie gazed out the window as the train eventually started to pull out and her eyes widened as she saw a familiar short, blonde haired man sprinting full speed to the train. Wolfie climbed over Bucky, catching him by surprise.
"Wolf! What're you—" Bucky stopped talking and helped her jerk down the window like other soldiers were doing to say goodbye to their loved ones. Wolfie darted her head out the window and Bucky followed once it was open.
"Steve! You're fucking nuts!"
The blonde haired man only grinned wider as he sprinted alongside the train. "Your asthma's gonna go fucking crazy!" Bucky laughed lightly as soon as Steve caught up with their window. Steve panted heavily. "I know!" He said between breaths. "We love you, Steve." Wolfie said, reaching her hand out. Steve grabbed and held it for a second with Bucky placing his on top of theirs.
"I love you guys." Steve said as the train started picking up faster. "Bye Stevie. Don't do anything stupid till we get back." Bucky said and Steve slowly grinned as he opened his mouth to speak. The train horn blared as Steve's mouth moved and Bucky only frowned because he didn't hear it.
Wolfie went pale, and Steve noticed, causing him to let go of their hands. And he knew she had heard. The blonde haired man gave a slight smile as he slowed down while the train sped up. Bucky waved with a grin as Steve returned it when he came to a stop.
Wolfie forced herself to wave back until the train station disappeared behind them, deep in the horizon as the sun started to come up. Wolfie flopped back into her seat, breathing out lightly to clam her nerves.
"What'd Steve say?" Bucky asked as he closed the window and sat back down. Wolfie gazed at the men around them, who were falling asleep and reading their magazines. The blonde haired girl looked back at her boyfriend. "That he loved us." She lied, slunking down into her chair. Bucky smiled and nodded as he wrapped an arm around her.
"You ready darling?" Bucky whispered as he pressed a kiss to her temple. Wolfie gazed out the window, watching the sun slowly rise for a second as a new wave of scents hit her and new sounds surrounded her. The blonde haired girl looked at her boyfriend and smiled slightly.
"Ready as I'll ever be."
