Jacqueline woke up and bright and early that morning, eagerly licking her fingers and trying to scrub the black ash off of her fingers.

If the doctors saw the blackness, they would assume she had a lighter of some sort and was burning herself. It is forbidden for a patient to have any sort of weapon in their possession.

Once satisfied with the cleanliness, she sat on her bed and waited for breakfast.

She heard the lock click and then the door squeaked open, Eliot rolled in a tray.

Jacqueline's eyes filled with happiness. Eliot has done so much for her and Val. Sneaking them dessert, allowing them to watch movies, and even got them out of a few procedures. Eliot was Jacqueline's little secret.

He sported powder blue scrubs, his arms pushing with effort as he rolled a metal cart in.

"Morning." He smiled, setting down a plate of eggs and cereal with orange juice on her desk.

Jacqueline almost leapt with joy when she smelled bacon.

"You shouldn't have." She giggled, making her way over to him.

She sat down on the rickety chair and looked up at her friend.

His glistening brown eyes looked upon her, his skin dark as well as his messy black hair. Jacqueline believed he was Hawaiian.

They were the same age which was strange since he was a doctor. But Jacqueline really didn't question it because she knew Eliot was a genius.

"Please tell me I don't have to go today." Jacqueline sighed, piling a couple of eggs on her toast and taking a bite.

"Unfortunately you do. There's no getting out of it today." Jacqueline sighed, putting her food down and taking a swig of sour orange juice that made her more thirsty.

She knew she's asked this before, but the urge to explode bubbled inside her,

"But honestly, E, what's the point of all this?" She sighed, slouching in her chair, resting her arm over the back of the old wood.

Eliot closed the door and made his way to her bed, sitting down.

"I've told you a thousand times already, I don't know. I've been trying to suck up to Levi and get some information but he doesn't trust me." He sighed, wringing his hands together.

"Must be a racist." She laughed.

Eliot shot her a serious glare, his expression grave for only half a second before he began to laugh. Seeing him smile made Jacqueline feel warm inside.

She didn't have a crush on Eliot but he was like an older brother to her. Him, herself, and Val were the best of friends; crazies or not.

"You really don't belong here." Eliot sighed, looking down at his lap and shaking his head.

"It's not your fault, E." Jacqueline spoke softly, walking away from her food and sitting next to Eliot, taking his hands in her own. Her skin looked like a sheet of paper compared to his deep shade of brown flesh.

"You're so cold, it's not right." He sounded exasperated. He then took her hands, rubbing them with her own, the heat warming Jacqueline instantly.

"I'm going to get you and Val out of here someday, I promise." He smiled lightly, kissing my hand.

I blushed despite my feelings of our sibling connection. He stood up.

"I have to go visit Val now. But you're scheduled for the operation around five. You can see Val after." He said, grabbing the tray again.

He grunted with effort, his muscles straining as he pushed the cart out the door and locked Jacqueline in her prison cell.

Jacqueline slouched over herself, inspecting her fingers. There was barely anything there anymore but the feeling of power was still present. Except it wasn't making her feel good.

It made her feel guilty.

Neither Val or Eliot knew about what she could do. And Jacqueline was certainly not planning on telling them.

She is trying so hard to not act like a freak around them but her reality set in a long time ago. She was a freak but she wasn't insane.

-----

An hour or so passed by and Jacqueline was bored out of her mind. She was tempted to light her fingers on fire again or maybe even explore some other weird tricks she didn't know she could do.

The idea was tempting.

She was about to make her way over to the mirror when a loud bang erupted from the room next door to her.

These walls were pretty much sound proof but the explosion of lights and electricity was pretty loud.

Jacqueline rubbed her hands in excitement. Mrs. Manning, a senile old woman always had crazy episodes. Jacqueline took it upon herself to screw a small peep hole to see the action.

She knew that made her sound like a creep but that peep hole was as close to entertainment as possible. Quietly stepping towards the white wall in front of her bed, she crouched down to the floor.

She leaned her eye towards the hole.

Jacqueline grew excited when she saw lights blown from their covers, they hung down in dangerous looking wires, the room was dark but Jacqueline had great vision.

But her eyes scrunched up in confusion when she saw not one but four people in the room.

She couldn't distinguish their features but one of them was extremely tall and the other was a woman with curly hair.

That was definitely not Mrs. Manning's room anymore.

Jacqueline couldn't imagine who it could be and how on earth there were four people in there. Nobody ever had visitors. Jacqueline was pretty sure this place wasn't even on the grid.

She couldn't hear much but there seemed to be heated conversation.

One shadow, Jacqueline believed to be a man, was pacing back and forth. Every time he seemed to talk or even move, his body motions were tense and almost violent.

As the conversation went on, Jacqueline began to grow tired of the silence. She grew to recognize a fifth person in the room that had something gripped tightly in their arms.

Before Jacqueline was about to walk away with boredom, something strange occurred. Two more people popped or just appeared  in the room. Jacqueline knew she did not see the door open once.

Was she actually going insane?

Now interested, she kept her vision focused on the scene once more. Everybody's features were still dark but there was some more heated conversation.

The shorter man with angry movements left the room as did some other people. Jacqueline could sense something seriously wrong. This did not feel right and she couldn't muster up a logical explanation.

Maybe this was a nightmare.

But Jacqueline wasn't an idiot. She could easily differentiate reality from dreams.

Sighing once more, she wanted to get up and leave the peep hole again. This time, Jacqueline could actually hear a human voice through the wall.

She had no idea what they were saying but the person must have been yelling in order for Jacqueline to hear it.

And without any warning whatsoever, a light so blinding filled every crevice of the room. Jacqueline pulled away immediately, shielding her eyes as the beam of light made its way into her room.

She scrambled away and stood up, brushing herself and throwing her hair behind her back.

Her heart was hammering against her chest. She was severely curious to look back into the hole but she didn't dare risk her eye sight being damaged.

Because after all, her eyes are what help her differentiate realities.
