"Can't Emily just home school me? I can do online classes!" I groaned, walking back into my room after changing. "No, you have to come to school with the rest of us. It'll be fun." Jacob assured me for the tenth time this week. It's Monday morning and I've been dreading this day all Summer, the day that I have to attend a new school in La Push. I felt sick to my stomach as I put on my makeup. "Hey don't be so nervous. You'll have at least one of us in all of your classes." He mumbled while gently pressing his lips to my head. I gave him a small smile. Jake and I have been inseparable lately. We have such a strong connection that I've never felt for anyone else. Part of me was excited to meet new people but most of me was terrified. I've been going to the same school for three years and I've had some really bad experiences. I just hope that this school is better than my last.
The heavy door slammed behind me as I stepped out of Jake's old truck. The school parking lot was filled with small groups of people. Some of them sitting on tailgates with their friends while others seemed to roam around. A lot of them turned and looked at me as we walked across the black pavement. Jake instinctively rested his hand on my back, guiding me towards the large building. It's my senior year but suddenly I felt like I was back in middle school. As we walked through the double doors I quickly brushed off my anxiety and stood up straight, trying to seem confident and relaxed as all of these strangers stared me down. I was immediately able to pick out a few friend groups. You had the preps, the athletes, the punk rockers (honestly I think I'd fit in pretty well with them), and at the far end of the hall there was another group of two girls and three boys who looked a lot different from the rest. They were all very pale and as we got closer I noticed they all had similar piercing eyes. They were an intense, clouded shade of brown that made me think they were all wearing contacts. However one of the guys seemed to have a slight reddish tint to his that was somehow unsettling. "Look who it is! The Cullens! I thought you guys wouldn't be back in town for a few more months?" Jake asked before shaking their hands and greeting them all. Then suddenly it clicked. Cullens. The same Cullens that Jacob told me all about. They were a family of vampires that lived off of animal blood rather than human. Their story is pretty fascinating actually. Edward fell in love with Bella, a human, and he eventually turned her to save her life after an accident.
(AUTHORS NOTE: Yes, I know Bella wasn't turned until towards the end of the saga when she's giving birth in but in my story, she was turned early.)
Jake had told me all the stories about the Cullens that he could think off. They were the only vampires he would trust. He told me that most of them had a special ability. Alice could see the future and her boyfriend, Jasper can feel and manipulate the emotions of those around him. Not to mention his crazy fighting skills. Bella can shield her mind and others from being read or attacked in any other way. Oh, and I think Jake said that Edward can reads minds. Which means he can hear everything I'm thinking right now. I looked down at my shoes out of embarrassment.
"You must be Anna. I'm Edward." He smiled at me knowingly while shaking my hand. His skin was ice cold and I almost flinched from the contact. "And I'm Bella. It's nice to finally meet you." She smiled warmly before the others rose to mimic her actions. She's so beautiful. I smiled politely as the others also shook my hand. I felt a little wary of Jasper at first but within seconds I was calm and I hoped that he wasn't controlling my emotions. Alice was next. She greeted me excitedly and I could feel the energy radiating off of her. Everything about her seemed inviting. Alice is the type of person who puts you in a better mood just by being present. The last ones of the group introduced themselves as Rosalie and Emmet. The names didn't stick out in my mind like the rest of them did but they seem very friendly. "It's been a long time since we've gotten to catch up. Jake hasn't had a chance to tell us much about you. Where are you from?" Bella asked. "North Dakota." I replied, being pleased that I've managed to get so far away from that place. "Whew. That's a nice trip." Emmet stated and I just smiled. Soon after that the bell rang and Jacob walked me to my first class of the day. "So what do you think about them?" Jake asked but his hand brushed against mine and I lost my train of thought for a few seconds. "They seem nice but knowing that Edward can hear my thoughts is really messing with me. I feel like I have to focus on something to avoid thinking about anything weird." I said and he chuckled at me. "Well this is your class. Have fun." He said sarcastically while giving me a hug. I just rolled my eyes at him and stepped inside the classroom. I tried to ignore the students as I walked up to the teacher. "Hi, I'm a new student. Is there any specific desk that you want me to-" I began but was cut off by a loud yet familiar voice. "Anna! Come sit by me, lab partner!" I turned to see Embry sitting at a table in the back, patting the seat next to him. The teacher nodded for me to sit with Embry and I smiled appreciatively. As I sat down Edward sat at the table behind us. He and Embry talked until the bell rang, signalling for everyone to shut up and sit down. "Alright guys. I've taught most of you before but it looks like we have a new student. What's your name?" The young teacher, who I later found out to be called Mr. Berkman, pointed at me and the whole class turned around to look. "Anna." I answered coolly while making sure I spoke loud enough for everyone to hear. There were smirks on a few faces while others shared glances. "Well Anna, it's nice to meet you. I'm sure you'll like it here." Mr. Berkman said politely and I nodded. By now people were already talking."Where did she move from?" "She's hot." "Is she friends with Embry?" "She rode to school this morning with Jacob Black." "Is she single?"
I rolled my eyes as their curiosity. They could just ask me themselves but that last comment had me thinking. Am I single? I mean it's obvious that Jake and I have something but we never really put a label on it. And there's no way in hell I'm going to ask him. Eh, I guess it's not that big of a deal. I was snapped out of my thoughts when I heard a deep chuckle coming from behind me. "Ah, young love." Edward whispered and I felt my face turn red. "Dude, you've seriously got to stop doing that." I groaned from embarrassment. "What?" Embry raised an eyebrow as he passed back a few worksheets. "She's wondering if she's still technically single." Edward said quietly and I held my head in my hands to hide my face. Now he's going to talk to Jake about it and it's going to make me look like a middle school girl. "But I thought you and Jake were together?" Embry questioned. He seemed amused by my embarrassment. "Yeah but we never put a label on it and I was just thinking about it. It doesn't matter." I mumbled while writing my name on the paper in front of me. I'm surprised to find that I remember all of the material on the worksheet. Science always was my favorite subject. "Well considering you're Jake's.." Embry trailed off his sentence as if he was about to say something that he wasn't supposed to. Him and Edward shared glances. "What?" I asked, clearly annoyed by their secrecy. Do they know something I don't? "I don't think Jake has told you yet and it's not my place to tell you." Embry said. He knows that I'll think about this until I go crazy and that just annoyed me even more. Suddenly every explanation I could think of ran through my head and I started getting anxious. A pit was forming in my stomach. "It's nothing bad." Edward smirked. "Then why can't you tell me?" I asked while looking between the two. "It's not my place. Now what did you get for number five?" Embry replied. I huffed and slid my paper over so he could see my answer.
By the time third period rolled around it was time for lunch and I was so grateful to get out of math class. Thankfully I also had that class with Alice who doesn't eat, so I didn't have to sit at a table by myself waiting for Jake. None of the Cullens eat actually because they're vampires. They don't need to. Their diet only consists of animal blood. Alice led me to a long rectangular table in the corner of the lunchroom where most of the Cullens were already sitting. Alice has been so helpful towards me today and for that I'm grateful. I can see us being good friends. Bella and Emmet are in my second block and I'm glad that I'm getting along well with them too. It's nice to get to know new people. I don't care if people look at me weird for being friends with them. They're pretty great. Alice and I sat down in front of Edward and Seth. Embry and Paul were sitting across from us as well, leaving the seats next to me empty. The rest of the Cullens were on the other end of the table. "Hey." Jake grinned while taking a seat next to me, Quil trailing behind him. "Hey." I smiled back before glaring at Embry for earlier. He just smirked. We all spent the rest of the time talking about the events of the day. Seth choked on his water as he laughed about God knows what. Maybe going to school here won't be so bad. "So you never told us why you guys came back so soon." Embry stated and the Cullens shared worried looks. Apparently they had gone on a long trip to stay with some friends. According to Jake, the Cullens like a change of scenery every so often but always return to La Push after a few months. They weren't supposed to be back for another month or so. "The Huts have been causing a lot of trouble lately. They want to move their clan here to keep a lower profile." Alice hesitated before she spoke again. "And I had a vision of them coming after the Quiluetes." She looked worried and when she spoke I felt my stomach sink. "Who are the Huts? And why would they attack anyone?" The words flew out of my mouth while everyone spoke in worried, hushed tones. "The Huts are a group of vampires up in Montana. They've been increasing their numbers and therefore, there's been more murders and missing people. If they were to attack it would probably be for territorial reasons, although Alice's visions aren't set in stone." Rosalie answered. I tapped my foot nervously. Emily! She's at home alone today! What if she gets hurt? I was about to get up to go call her when Edward spoke up. "Carlisle and Esme are with Emily and Sam. I assure you, they're safe." He reassured me but I was still tense. "Calm down. It's okay." Jake whispered and gently squeezed my hand under the table. Regardless of his actions, I could tell he was freaking out as well.
What are we going to do?
