Chapter 4
The Blackout
People were telling him he had to go, had to remain safe and escape. Was that really what he was supposed to do at a time of panic and disaster leave the people behind that he had proclaimed he would look after. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom stood in his office contemplating all this as his employees and friends urged him to get into the car outside that would take him and the other “important people” of the country to a secure and safe location until there was more information and news. He knew he had to go as his wife and child would be expecting him and the selfish and caveman part of him told him to flee and remain safe.
As he was bundled into the black armoured Hummer, accompanied by two hulking, stony bodyguards the Prime Minister couldn’t help but think of the documents in his little briefcase. Those 40 odd pages of information sent to him by the President of America, full of hope, amazement and wonder now felt like a lead balloon in his hands. Clearly these new discoveries made by the USA had been the catalyst and the beginning to what was now happening all over the world.
The president had outlined what they had found and then the initial contact that was made and the small pieces of chat and information that was exchanged with this mysterious voice in space. It had been exciting to hear and be a part of, it was what all children thought at one point in time, that there was others out there, that we were not alone. Not too long after the monologue was sent over to the Prime Minister he had received a phone call from the President saying something had come through into the facility and that it was not of this world, it was not friendly and it did not come in peace. After hearing from the President of what had happened in the control room, he then proceeded to tell him that now all over the states vortexes were appearing with more creatures that were destroying the cities and killing the civilians. While on the phone to the president the first reports reached him that the same was also happening in the UK. By the time the PM and all his officials had gathered as much information on the escalating situation and tried to make it coherent there was no point in making an official issue of warning. In the time it took to gather the camera crew it had already been reported that mass fleeing was happening all over the country and that creatures of unknown origin or species were savagely killing everyone in sight. Now they were telling him just to leave and that was what he was going to do, there was nothing he could do. This was a completely new disaster that no one in the history of Earth had ever had to deal with before. Earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, terrorist attacks, war and economical crisis’s were all difficult and terrifying but there were ways to combat those problems but for the mass invasion of Earth by other worldly being’s who were ceaselessly killing innocent civilians was another ball game, and one totally out of his league. He did order that the military was to be put into immediate action to seek and destroy any and as many of the creatures as they could. Though he did not think space travelling beasts would have a problem with the British Army, he was beginning to regret sending thousands of men out to a threat that he could not even face himself and a threat he was sure would be their deaths. He was beginning to go limp and deflated from his helplessness and defeatist attitude as he was driven at high speed away from his little shell of an office.
As they turned a corner to go up another road the brakes were applied heavily, and he was glad to have the habit of putting on his seatbelt as it became taunt and kept him firmly rooted to his seat. When he looked out the windscreen the road was blocked with abandoned cars, those that were upright and those that were not, there was also debris as if an explosion had taken place. Then he registered the monster which can only be compared to Godzilla, was standing only 150 yards ahead in front of an office building. His armed guards immediately sprang from their positions in the car to become crouched tigers behind the now open doors pointing their handguns at the beast. It stood at least 5 stories high with what looked like scales. The scales were not all of one colour making the thing look like it was diseased with patches of dying skin, akin to leprosy. It seemed to sway as it took inventory of the small vehicle, even though its milky white eyes did not seem to register anything directly. Its huge claw like feet had created craters where it stood, churning up concrete and tar as easily as a child churns up sand in a play pit.
The PM is in total and utter fear yet also in awe at the sight of this alien in the middle of Westminster, was that not what this thing was, an alien? It begins slowly to bend from what the PM assumed to be its knees and all he could think of was his daughter running in to him and showing him her plie that she learned in ballet class, it was what the Godzilla was doing now. He sat in his Hummer totally transfixed until in the blink of an eye the Godzilla had disappeared. He heard the gunshots roaring but could not see were the danger was until he caught sight of one of the body guards guns pointing to the sky. Then the shadow around him became larger and darker until it began to make sense. The Godzilla had jumped. For the PM the world turned black and the he would never get to that safe sanctuary for the important people of the United Kingdom, where ever it was located.
