Sunday 6:37pm
I glanced at the large clock sitting above the check in desk in the lobby. We were suppose to meet at 6:30 and so far it was only my sister and me. "Of course we would be the only ones remotely on time." She said chucking. I nodded my head in agreement. This was how it was most of the time, Grace and I were on time and everyone else was at least 15 minutes late.
As we waited we watched a women in an oversized windbreaker that looked like she just walked out of the 80's argue with the manager. "I called two months ago and booked two rooms, what do you mean you don't have my reservation!" The women screamed. "Listen mam I know your upset but I need you to lower your voice. Now I'm trying to do everything I can but there just aren't any open rooms." The man said looking like he wished he was anywhere but here. You and me both buddy, you and me both. "Lower my voice? Lower my voice! You lost my reservation and your asking me to lower my voice?!" The women roared. Grace looked at me and we both cracked a smile. "I wish we had popcorn." She whispered to me. At this point the man behind the desk had said something I had missed but it was enough to put this women over the edge. She yelled some profanities before picking up a vase on the desk and throwing it to the ground. I braced myself for the noise of breaking glass but it never came. The vase just bounced a bit before rolling to the corner. "Figures, plastic." The women growled before storming out of the the hotel. After about 25 seconds a red mini van squealed out of the parking lot. Grace and I looked at each other again, this time not being able to contain our laughter.
Shortly after the mini van lady left the rest of our family came into the lobby. We got in to thee separate rental cars. Mom and dad in the first, Grace and me in the second, and Brett and Tessa in the last. Grace asked if she could drive which I certainly wasn't going to complain about. I just turned up the radio and let my eyes slowly droop and then close.
Someone gently shoved me awake. "C'mon Blaire it was a 15 minute car ride and you still fell asleep." She said rolling her eyes. I just shrugged and unbuckled myself.
"Table for six please." My mom said giving the middle age women behind the podium a tight lip smile. "Right this way." We followed the women to a table near the back. I let my eyes shift around the room before they landed on a booth that was across the room from where we were being seated. My eyes got big and my face went pale. "Blaire? Blaire is that you?" The girl said I tried to hide my face but it was already to late, she was walking over here. "Oh Blaire it's been to long." She said wrapping her arms around me while I kept mine tight to my sides. "Still holding grudges I guess." She mumbled. I scoffed. "Carol it's so good to see you." My mother said patting her on the back. I rolled my eyes and pushed past them both sitting at our table. "Honey," my mom started but decided to leave it alone. My brother gave me a knowing look and a sad smile.
To say dinner was prolonged was an understatement. After the encounter with Carol everyone sat down and a thick tension hovered in the air. My brother and sister sat on either side of me and I knew they wanted to say something but didn't really know what to say. That was okay though, I wasn't really in the mood to talk anyways.
When the food came everyone dug in. I on the other hand shifted my fork back an forth through the pasta on the plate in front of me occasionally shooting daggers towards Carols table.
"Gee Blaire don't eat you food to fast" Brett said nodding at my food. I ate a fork full and smiled with my eyes wide at him. He laughed and shook his head. I could feel my mother glaring at me for not using 'proper etiquette' but at the moment I couldn't care less.
On our way out of the restaurant we had to pass by carols table. A small smile spread across my face as I accidentally bumped into her table and her drink fell onto her lap. "Oops" I said before turning around and heading out of the restaurant.
I got in the car Grace followed quickly behind and pulled out of the parking lot before I even had time to turn the radio down. She was laughing so hard tears were forming. "That was great but moms going to kill you! She's probably in there telling Carol how sorry she is and that she'll buy her another outfit." She said between laughs. I chuckled knowing it was probably true.
