“ You’ll be happy to know, the nurse says that you do not have a serious concussion” Mr. Dwighter was saying.

He now sat opposite from me, his fingertips lightly steepled. I felt like leaning over the desk to him, grabbing him by the collar and saying “ Oh well that good. As long as I don’t have a serious concussion!” His casual posture and relaxed voice irritated me, he could care less if I was dead.

I felt my mum’s hand rest on my arm. I looked over and she gave me a reassuring smile as if to say “ It’s all right. I’ll settle this out”. My head was throbbing and the ice pack they had given me was already melting, the chilly water sliding down the bridge of my ear.

“ The nurse does say however, that she would like to take a closer look. She has been kind enough to offer a check up at it this very moment” the principal continued through his blubbery lips.

Mr. Dwighter was the school principal. He was fat and wore a great deal of purple. His head reminded me of a bowling pin, and his hair was so greasy it looked as though he had run through a down pour. It was becoming clear how truly sincere and understanding he was, as spoken of by Mrs. Mahiru.

We now sat in his office, he behind his desk overflowing with paper work and knick nacks, playing with a bubble head cat. Mum and I were perched closest to the door, near a locked cupboard and a dart board. There was a picture of a chubby little boy holding a fish, nearest his computer. He’d told us that the boy was his son but at the moment I pitied any woman who had married this insensitive man.

The door opened and there appeared the school nurse with a girl by her side. The girl I’d been told was in my home room. Her name was Natalia. She wore a navy blue tunic with a white collar that had a red bow attached to it.  Her wavy blonde hair reached down to about mid stomach and her blue eyes were doe like as they peered at me across the room.

Apparently she had ran to the principal’s office when people had noticed me on the ground at 7:43 and had helped me at 7:45 to walk to the nurse’s office, as I was barely conscience enough balance myself up. Immediately after which the Mr. Dwighter had telephoned my mum and she had shown up 10 minutes ago.

Mr. Dwighter asked me for my story, what I’d felt, searched through metical records with my mum and then typed away on his computer for minutes. During which my mum and I stared awkwardly at each other, both not wanting to start the conversation.

I got out of my chair and walked slowly to the door, getting  little looks of wrory from Natalie and I wondered why. The nurse I swear looked as though she had stepped out of a horror film.

“ This way” her nasally voice ordered me and as I past out the door I got a wiff of her.

Let’s just say if you ever decide to smell rotton cabbage and spoiled milk you’ll know exactly how Madam Edean smelled. Gagging slightly I followed her down the hallway a little and turned the corner.

Her office was signifigantly smaller than the principale’s office, which had been puny to begin with. The walls were a moldy off green colour messely slopped over layered bricks. Immediatly I felt my caustophobia return as I took in the one sqaure window with iron bars. There was a cot in the middle of the room opposite some counters to the far wall bellow the window. A sink, drawers and a garbage occupied most of that corner, as well as a measuring scale. There were no pictures, or magazines or anything reasurring like you would usually find  in a doctors office. In fact, most of what I saw remeinded me of frankenstein. Hooks, thread, scapels, you name it, it was there.

“ Lie on the cot please” she said and I obbeyed. Out of the corer of my eye I saw Natalie take post near the door obviously not wanting to crowd the nurse. The nurse proceeded to look at my head, quite roughly I might add. Did no one in form her I have a "mild concussion"?

"No problem" she said to me and It was now that I noticed her heavy russian accent.

I smiled at the doe-like girl when the expection was over and she smiled back at me timidly. It was the first real kindness someone had shown me all day. I left that room as quickly as I could and mum was waiting for me by the car. I would have to thank her when I saw her next. Mum and I walked to the car in silence but she gave me an apologetic smile when our eyes met before the car started. The whole way home I couldn't stop thinking about the boy who had shaken me awake. I was slightly annoyed that he had shaken me so roughly and then just left me on the ground but at the same time I felt like I knew him in some ways. My stomauch felt nautious but I wasn't sure if that was from my injury. For now I just needed to tak a hot shower and rest. I would try to piece things together tomorrow.
