The dreadful analysis of our cumulative knowledge of this semester is here, finals week. Kate and I were isolated in our corner in the library. We've been in this room for hours studying our courses with two of our other friends, James and Kris. We decided it was time for a much needed break, so we packed up our stuff and headed to the student union. Not many students were here since most of them were cramming in the library like us. Luckily the food court was still open. I wasn't that hungry, just needed to rest my eyes so we found a table. Kate and Kris bought some sushi and coffee for the four of us. Derrick was so exhausted that he slept right on the table next to me.
I scanned the food court for other students around us, but only a few tables were occupied, and even some were still studying. Kate and Kris ate their food slowly while playing with their phones, while I tried to keep my hands busy by folding paper. Eventually I decided to actually make something. Kate glanced at my hands for what I was doing and gave me a look. I just laughed it off and took a sip of my coffee.
After two decent tries, I managed to make a lotus out of the paper and wondered what to do with it. We avoided as much as possible to avoid the topic of school so we asked each other about our relationships. Kate and Derrick have been dating for 5 years now since we graduated from high school. Kris hasn't had a boyfriend and is waiting till this semester was over. I haven't been in relationship for awhile now and so Kate and Kris would attempt to look one for me. Suddenly I knew what I wanted to do with the lotus.
On the back of the flower, I wrote a note on it: You're beautiful, along with my phone number.
I've noticed this girl a couple of tables away from us studying and taking notes in her book since we arrived. Without thinking, I decided to give the lotus to her. I asked Kris what she thought of her, and asked me why. I told her that I was going to give this to her.
"You don't even know her."
"That's the point."
"You're either stupid or bold to do this, will you actually?"
"Yea, when we leave I'll just place it on her table and walk away. "
"What?! That's stupid, why don't you talk to her."
"She looks busy and plus, this gives me a chance to see if she's open enough."
Kate and Kris finished their snack and I woke up Derrick. Kate had told Derrick what I was planning and he just smiled at me. We packed up our stuff and started to get up. I was the last to leave the table, and then I walked over to the girl's table.
I noticed she had be studying what I thought to be Japanese.
"Hi, excuse me." I smiled at her and placed the lotus in front of her and walked away.
My friends looked at my direction and to the girl's reaction. They told me that she looking at our direction.
We walked back to our room in the library and settled in for another long night. After awhile of studying, I received a text:
"Hey, nice origami.
My name is Alice"
I was a bit shocked and happy at the same time. I had told Kris that I got a text and they all laughed at me. "Hey it worked, good for you."
"Nice to meet you too, I'm Chase.
If you're wondering, this was the first time I ever did this, I'm a student here too."
"Haha I was gonna ask you if you do this often...give random girls origami?"
"Actually you're the only girl I've done this to. We were studying and I decided to make something and give it to someone."
"So this someone was me then, hm?"
"Yup. So what were you studying?"
"Japanese history and culture."
"Sounds interesting, but I'm pretty sure you're as busy as we are for finals."
"Yea, I hate this time of the semester."
"Don't we all, but maybe after all this we could officially meet?"
"Sure that would be nice. We actually have this meeting tomorrow night, care to join?"
"Okay, just let me know the time and place."
"8pm, at the Science hall, see you there?"
"I will be there. Enjoy studying like the rest of us."
By then, we stopped talking and I continued with my books. I couldn't stop smiling and Kate noticed that from me. She hit my shoulders and told me to focus. She was right, I had my first final on Monday morning.
