(Odessa Pov)
"Damn it, Brandy. Would you just get off my back already?" I heard my father yell as he stumbled in our house, obviously drunk yet again.
"Tyrone, you're the one out there spending money at bars while your daughter and I are here struggling. What kind of man are you? Why not just get another job before we lose the house? You know we've already gotten an eviction notice in the mail," My mother said to my father.
"I've told you that I've been looking. Jobs aren't that easy to find, you know! How about you let me do what I do and leave me be?" Daddy slurred.
"You know what? When our asses end up on the street, I hope you'll be satisfied, you drunken bastard," Mama said before coming upstairs and knocking on my room door.
KNOCK
KNOCK"Come in," I said as I sat on the edge of my bed.
"Hey, baby. You alright?" Mama said as she sat on the bed with me.
"Yeah, I'll be fine. You okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, I'm okay. Look, I'm really sorry you had to hear your father and I arguing, Odessa. Then again, you already know how ignorant he can get when he's drinking liquor," Mama said as she wrapped her arm around my shoulder.
"It's okay, mama. It's not anything I'm not used to. So, what's going to happen to us? Are we going to have to move away from here?" I asked as I lowered my head.
"As much as I hate to say it, we may have to leave Oklahoma and move to Kansas with your Grandma Margaret," Mama sighed.
"Are you sure I can't try to find a job around here? Come on, there has got to be somewhere that's hiring. Hey, I'll even quit school just to work full time," I suggested.
"Baby, don't be talking like that. There aren't many places around here to get jobs and you know this. We can either stay here and get thrown out in the next two days or we can leave now," Mama said.
"But, mama, I love it here. Please, just let me try to get a job," I said.
"Odessa, you've been applying for jobs. Have you heard back from any of them?" Mama asked.
"No," I said under my breath."Okay then. We're going to have to move and that's final," Mama said as she stood up and walked towards the door.
"Okay, fine. I'll start packing," I sighed as I got from off my bed and went to my closet.
