Chapter 3
The bell rang, that how I finally knew I was allowed to leave the mines to go home for the night. I walked out of the mines looking like a zombie. I was extremely tired, and hungry. I had gotten only half a handful of rice today. I only made 54 Zimbabwe dollars (equivalent to 15 cents Canadian) but at least it was something. As I biked home I saw the boy sitting on the side of the road as I do every day. He looked about my age, he has black hair, and beautiful brown eyes. He looked up at me as I rode past and all I could see in his face was sadness and maybe a little bit of hope, I could tell he was starving and I knew exactly how that felt, so I stopped my bike and quickly ran over to where he sat and dropped 50 dollars into his hand, he looked up at me with wide eyes in disbelief and I could see the word “dankie” starting to form on his lips (which means thank you in Afrikaans) but I ran to my bike and began to pedal fiercely away before he could get the words out of his mouth. “What did I just do?!?!” I kept asking myself over and over again. I knew that what I had done was forbidden and I had just gone against the government. “why did you do that Nya?”, “why don’t you know that could get you killed?”, “why wouldn’t you learn from your father’s mistakes?” I didn’t have any answers for these questions that kept buzzing in my mind but I knew how that boy felt; useless, starving, and guilty. I couldn’t bare to bike by him knowing he wasn’t okay. I would not. No I could not tell mama about this.
