"Up, up, up... STOP! A little to the left... Tad to the right... Stop! Lower! Tony, Charlie, nail 'em in boys!"
The last panel is nailed in place and the loft of the barn is finished. It's brand new, and the life of the barn starts. The cows are led in. It's a small barn. It holds 10 cows and has a nice shower area for the cows. The milking parlor has brand new machinery. Everything is nice and clean. The farmer's girls run around inside. Their curls bounce and their dresses wave back and fourth. The barn cats stroll in and the girls scoop them up and show them around. Their sweet childish voices ring out in the sweet smelling barn. The barn smells of pine and molasses. The farm employees haul countless bails of hay to the loft, where its story begins.
"Jinny! Come, look! The loft is so nice! Daddy? Can we play up here?"
"Rita? Are you up there? Yes you can play up there!" Yelled Farmer Carl Denny. His daughters Jinny and Rita were twins. The both had round blond curls and mint dresses today. Jinny sped by her father and ran up the loft ladder.
"Rita? Are you up here? It's big!"
Jinny came up the ladder and looked around worryingly, where was Rita? She called her name a few times. Then she sat down in her mint dress, covering it in hay.
"Rita! This isn't funny! You're scaring me!"
Just as Jinny was about to start crying, Rita came up the ladder.
"Jinny? Don't be scared! There is another exit a ways down! I just walked around! I'm so sorry!"
Rita comforted her sister. Poor Jinny was holding in sniffles and tears. The sisters were very close and always together. Jinny held Rita's hand. They sat there in silence even after Jinny calmed down. They took in the tall ceilings and the small dust particles floating in the air from the wood shavings that were being freshly laid down below by Rory, the girl's older brother.
"Jinny! Rita! Are you gals up in the loft? Papa wants you help Mama with dinner!"
"But Rory! We want to help you!"
"This is boys work, girls don't work in barns! Imagine Mama workin' in the barn!"
"Mama milks the heifers! So why can't we help you lay down the shavings?"
There was a short pause while Rory thought.
"Because Papa said so! Now scram!!"Hey, new book! Any questions? Comment or message me!
