Mudstar's rise

Chapter 1

Pheonixkit tumbled over hollykit while mudkit crouched down. His ear twitched slightly before he stumbled forward blindly. Pheonixkit batted at his ear. "Come on mudkit! Even berryleaf's kits opened their eyes, and they were born 2 sunrises after us!" He meowed, running back to hollykit and volekit. mudkit nodded and opened his eyes one by one, the light from the entrance making him wince. He looked around in awe after his eyes got used to it. He spotted his mother, blazestar, asleep on the far side of the nest. He smiled and ran over to her. He nudged her shoulder and she popped awake. Her worried gaze loosened up as she saw it was only mudkit. She smiled brightly. "You've opened your eyes!" She purred and gave him a lick. He nodded proudly and opened his mouth to speak, but blazestar cut him off. "Coldheart!" She called, flicking her tail over her kit happily. After a few heartbeats the lean medicine cat entered the nursery. He smiled slightly as he saw mudkit. "Well look at that." He purred cheerfully, before his face returned to the normal level of seriousness. He crouched in front of mudkit and looked him in the eye. "Mudkit. Can you tell me what color your mother is?" He asked, flicking his tail to blazestar. She looked offended and pulled mudkit to her before he could reply. He gaze rested calmly on the medicine cat, although it burned with anger. "Do you think he's colorblind or something!?" She spat, her neck fur bristling. Coldheart shook his head. "I can tell his eyesight is perfect. But i think there might be something else." He looked at mudkit again. "Please tell me what color your mother is." Mudkit glanced at blazestar before looking back at coldheart. He opened his mouth, and it moved as if he was talking, but no words came out. Blazestar stared at her son, obviously confused. "Mudkit come on. Its easy." She urged. Mudkit stared at her in confusion as he opened his mouth again, and moved his mouth as he would if he was saying 'orange', but again, no sound. Coldheart glanced at blazestar, her bright green eyes were focused on her kit, filled with sorrow. "He's mute isn't he?" She asked her medicine cat. He nodded. "That won't stop him from becoming a warrior though." He meowed softly, trying to cheer his leader up. She nodded and gave mudkit a lick on the head, before the small kit tumbled across the nursery and back to his brother and hollykit.
