Carter sits in the front and I'm in the back again. I look out the window as the world goes flying by. The world is so big, and yet so small. Carter grabs a cable and plugs it into her phone. The next thing I know, "C'mon" is playing, and she's singing along. The world is spinning, but I can't feel the ground.
My heart starts to pound as we head to our high school. The dance was a walk-in event where you can pay when you walk in. Carter's mom walks in so she can play for our tickets in. We get our tickets, and Carter and I head in. I stay behind to thank her mother one more time.
As we walk in, my ears are met with loud music. Carter stands at the top of the stairs leading to the dance floor, and I hide behind her. The next thing I know, we're showered with a blinding light, and everyone's eyes are on us. I try my best to hide, but Carter just grabs my arm and walks me down the steps. "They're all staring at you," I whisper to her. "If you hold me this close, I'll get dragged into the limelight."
She stops, then turns to face me. "You're the one everyone's starting at, not me. Besides, you're going to be in the spotlight anyway; you look amazing. Now, go find someone to hang out with." We make it to the bottom of the stairs where Sebastian is waiting for her. Carter lets go of my arm and leaves me. I'm alone with everyone staring at me.
I try to move away from the stairs and into a corner, but there's nowhere to hide. Before long, Carter becomes the center of attention. Her and Sebastian are dancing in the center of the dance floor, and everyone's watching. Carter and Sebastian look so wonderful together, it's almost hard to watch. I move out of my corner and over to the center wall.
I have been here long enough that people stopped looking at me. There are still a lot of people looking at Carter and Sebastian, but that's just because they look great together. Carter has moved from the dance floor to a table with all her other friends. May, a friend of ours, and her boyfriend take a seat at the same table and they all laugh. It looks like Carter is having enough fun without me. Why did I even come to this stupid dance? Everyone had masks on and it was hard to tell who anyone was. Carter's having fun and I feel so alone. I'm considering leaving, until a commotion starts. Everyone's looking at the stairs. That's where he stood.
At the top of the stairs is a young man in a white suit with a blue rose in his chest pocket. He has pure blond hair and perfect white skin. His suit makes him look like a prince or an angel. I can't help but look, too.
He descends, but before he can hit the last step, all the girls were all over him, asking for dances or to keep him company - anything, really, to get even a second to talk to him. As for me... I stayed where I was. I had no desire to meet him or get dragged back into the limelight. But, it didn't hurt to watch him. He looked around the room and his eyes met with mine, or at least I think they did. He moves away from the other girls and heads straight for me. I stay still, but continue to watch him. As he walks, the whispers grow louder. He stops in front of me, bows his head, and looks straight into my eyes. His eyes are a light green and they look like they can capture a soul. "Will you grant me the pleasure of this dance?"
My heart skips a beat. I can't breathe. Someone just asked me to dance. ME! This was unheard of. I stare into his light green eyes, unsure of what to say. Everyone in the room holds breath. No one moves, no one makes a sound. My heart is pounding so hard, I'm scared that someone would hear it. I look down at his extended hand. His skin is perfect, not a scratch or a freckle.
My body starts to move on its own. My hand extends outward, falling into his hand. He wraps his fingers around mine and walks me to the center of the dance floor; everyone moves out of the way. The DJ plays a slow song and we start to dance.
"Hey, do you see that?" Whispers pop up everywhere. "Yeah, they are so not right for each other. I mean, she's some emo wannabe, while he's... Beautiful. The two just don't mix."
