After a what felt like long, long time, the attic finally started to actually look decent.
But then- of course, my hard work paid off with being stacked with even more hard work; work I was almost 100% sure was to hard for two unexperienced teenage girls.
Although Aunt Candace thought differently. So after almost two full hours of cleaning out the stuffy old attic and ruffling through a bunch of old, crappy things that had no meaning whatsoever, I got called down by Aunt Candace.
"Fiona!" She called up to me, her normal high-pitched cheery voice back in place despite the weirdness that had occurred earlier. "Come down and get some lunch! Afterwards I have one more task for you for today!"
I sigh in relief, racing down the steep stairs as fast as I can without falling.
I hadn't realized how hot and sweaty I was until the cool, breathable air hit my body. I let myself stop to take a giant breathe of air through the nose. The fresh air fills my lungs completely, a feeling that seemed unfamiliar to me at the moment.
After wiping beads of sweat off my forehead which I had just noticed, I gently shut the door of the attic.
Before I turn, I notice The small keyhole that locks the door of the attic. As I stare at it, I try to imagine the key I found in the creepy upstairs room fitting into the hole.
After checking behind me at the staircase, I quickly take the rusty key off of my neck, inserting it into the keyhole. The key, however, refuses to go in.
Sighing in confusion, I put the chain back around my neck, turning and walking downstairs to find Aunt Candace and Katelyn sitting at the table and nonchalantly eating sandwiches as they make conversation.
Katelyn looks up at me with her mouth full, a cheery smile on her face. She holds up a finger signing for me to wait a second as she quickly chews and swallows the food, sighing happily afterwards then looking back at me.
"Hi Fiona!" She starts, waving at me excitedly. "Ms.Candace made up some great food for us, come try one!" She says enthusiastically.
"Awh, thank you dear" Aunt Candace replies to Katelyn bashfully. "Now come over and sit down, dear. I'm sure you could use a break."
I stare between them and nod silently, slowly walking over and sitting down beside Katelyn.
"Alright, now then. Straight to business" Aunt Candace continues, gently clapping her hands together. "So I was watching the news, and later tonight there's gonna be a big storm coming our way. And I'm sure you have seen the minor leakage though all of the holes through the roof. So- I'd like for you girls to patch up any holes you find." She says, nodding.
Both me and Katelyn stare at the old women blankly. Katelyn stops chewing on the ham and cheese sandwich she had been enjoying.
"Now I know it sounds like a lot, but it's not much work. All you have to do is climb up through the attic window and cover the holes temporarily." She adds quickly.
After swallowing her mouthful of ham and cheese, Katelyn nods slowly in understanding. "Okay, that doesn't sound like to much of a challenge. What will we patch it with?" She asks.
"Oh, I have some Leak Stopper in the garage. It's really easy to manage." Aunt Candace smiles, nodding happily.
"So you want us to climb onto the ceiling and patch up holes on the roof of your three-story house before it starts pouring rain?" I recap, noticeable irritation in my voice.
"If your up to it" Aunt Candace answers quickly. "Your uncle used to do it for me, but ever since he's past the holes have been coming back. I'm to old to do it myself, and I need to save my money for more important things." She sighs.
