I lean onto the door and take a deep breath. I crack open the door, and see little July, struggling with the baker, the Elgen. She
squirms around in the mans arms. He doesn't even seem to be alive, it is as if he doesn't even have a brain, or feelings. I leave him out of mind and rush over with my machete in my left hand extended. He turns around, and the first thing that I notice is that his eyes, they look sad, crushed. His lips pressed in a straight line open slightly. I shift my attention to the gun he holds in his hands, which are shaking.
"You girl, what are doing here? Oh well I guess I could take both of you kids." He says kids like I am just another person to steal. I swallow and gather up my courage.
"I am here to save July." I say eyeing the gun that stayed by his side. He throws his head back and laughs, a laugh that throws a chill through my spine, a laugh that sounds so bland and cold, so lifeless. He stops just as abruptly as he shows some sorrow for me. His change of emotions is what scares me the most. He looks behind him at what used to be his house. His little boys rooms light is on making it easy to see the teenage boy laying softly on his bed, fast asleep. Everyone knows that if you keep your light on, they are sure to take you. As he sees his son it just makes the baker madder. He pulls his gun from his side and points it right at me, I'm not sure why I didn't make a move at him while he was watching his boy. His face just made me curious. July lays on the floor next to her dad sobbing, loud tears.
She suddenly screams a loud soul crushing scream that makes the man flinch and look back. I know now is my chance, I grab the gun from his hands and use my machete to slash a deep gash in his thigh. He screams, and the little girl girl rushes to my side. I swiftly shove the gun into the backpack and grab July's hand. I pull her along rushing towards the dark jungle. She suddenly stops, my hand jerks back almost pulling it out of my socket, a deep pain flows through my arm. How could this girl be so stupid we need to go. I look down and the girl is staring at the jungle petrified.
"Come on we have to leave." I say pulling her arm, but she wouldn't budge.
"I can't, my dad told me I can't, go in the jungle, I can't go past the shadow line." July says looking back at the Elgen holding his thigh, and her dad laying dead on the floor. I look at the little girl.
"My mom told me the same thing, but you know what, if we don't go now we are both going to die. What do you think your dad would want?" I say to her firmly but softly. She looks up at me and back at her dad, tears scrap across July's face. She turns her head to the jungle and nods.
A shadow of a man appears in the distance. He holds a gun. I turn to July who doesn't see him.
"We must go now." I quietly say in her ear.
   And we start to run.
