"Zero, it's time for the jump." My boss, Vey, had said to me about fifteen minutes ago. I was still waiting to go to the Toob for the jump. The Toob or Turbulent Obstruct Orbit Travel. I was supposedly the first to make the jump but everytime I looked into the room where it was being "built" nothing was going on. No hammers or drills or people shouting orders, yet I could never get a clear view of the machine.
Vey came into the room I was waiting in, which was just a plain waiting room with cream colored walls, a white couch, and a small house plant in the corner. He motioned for me to follow him. I stood up and fixed the leather straps on my legs. I was already in my outfit for the jump back in time. Since I was going to the medieval ages I was given a simple leather tunic that was a tight fit, leather riding pants made of the same dark leather of my tunic, and a wrap to go around my lower face and over my head, that was a deep forest green, with black knee high, thin and light boots. They barely had any cushion but the suitors had said they would be better in the forests of where i'm going. I had small niches and sheaths along my hip and on my back for multiple items I was going to be given when I get to the Toob.
He led me through the different corridors, going left and then right taking two more lefts before we get to the door. One thing i've learned while living in the slums as a thief is to always learn where you are. I still don't know why the infamous Vey Young choose me to go back in time but I didn't refuse when he said my family would be bumped up three classes. I looked over at him and took him in once more. He was tall and slim, not skinny slim but not big and bulky. He had dirty blond hair, he also had deep grey eyes with hints of blue. He was wearing his signature dark blue suit and green tie. I looked away from him when he looked down at me and opened the door, "After you.." He pointed inside and held open the door for me.
"Miss. Astraea! Miss. Astraea! You're here at-" "Tom! What have I told you about her name?" Vey interrupted the main technicians calls with his booming voice. Tom looked down and mumbled his apologies before looking back at me with his cheerful amber eyes. His shaggy chestnut hair fell in front of his eyes and he brushed it away and motioned for me to follow him.
"So glad you're finally here Miss. Astr-Zero..." He caught himself as he caught Vey glaring at him. We walked over to the Toob and he showed it to me. It was a big oval shaped piece of deep grey and bright white metal. It had light blue tubes coming off the sides, with two on each side going to someplace off on the other side of the room. I walked up to it and Tom opened the door in the front and a bright light flashed. I felt something on my back but when the light went away, so did the feeling on my back. I stood for a moment and touched my back. I pulled off my green hood a black feather. I quickly put it back into my hood and followed Tom up the stairs to the entrance to the Toob.
"So we have some tools and other things for your stay in the medieval ages. We have a recurve bow made out of the strongest redwood we could find, along with a quiver with some arrows provided. We also have small throwing knifes, we know you took the lessons so we decided to include those for you. We gave you a satchel with some rations and some coins. We also put in some paper and charcoal, something Vey said to give to you." Tom smiles and looks over at Vey. Vey looked at the technician with an angry expression but he did have a small blush on his face. I put all of the tools and the satchel on me and went to face Tom, waiting for his command.
"Ok, Miss. Zero if you could step into the white glowing circle inside the Toob we will prepare your mission." He smiled and left. Vey stayed though, I looked over at him questionably. He opened his mouth as if to say something but closed it and walked away. What were you going to say?
I stepped into the circle and the door closed behind me. I re checked myself and looked in the satchel. I had a few scroll looking papers and a few pieces of charcoal in a pouch. I also had a small bag filled with coins and three or four pieces of bread with a small bag of oats. There was a smaller piece of paper but as a reached down to grab it a voice from a speaker inside the Toob startled me, " Please state your full name, age, district, and designated animal sign" the robotic female voice called out. I remember when I first got my animal sign, the day my parents cast me out and my older brother had to take me in. I'm a Black Sparrowhawk. One sign believed to be the sign of a Shudder, the rebels who live outside of the districts in the waste lands. After that I was sent to live in the slums and pay a tax to my parents so they fed me and my brother. I sighed and called out what the robot lady asked, " My name is Astraea Glass. I am nineteen years old and I live in District Zero, level-ground. My designated animal is a Black Sparrowhawk." I stated and then the world went white. For a split second the feeling was back. It was like my back was heavier but I had more power at the same time. The feeling disappeared and I passed out.
