The mystery of an unlocked door was just too tempting to resist. So naturally I went inside, and was greeted by the strong stench of men's cologne. I scrunched my nose and tried to suck in some fresh air. The culprit was a broken bottle in the wastebasket by the bed.
Once I had adjusted to the strong scent, I continued my snooping. There were no pictures or personal items to be seen. In fact, It looked like no one had been in the room for days. I sat down on the edge of the bed, disappointed with my mystery. You'd think these rich kids would have some secrets lying around.
"What do you think you are doing?" A voice behind me questioned. I jumped at the sound.
"Sorry, you surprised me. I was just looking around." I stood up and faced the stranger leaning against the doorway. "Mason right? This is your house?"
"Yes, and you apparently are an uninvited guest."
"Whoa chill out. I was just looking around. Besides, it's just an empty bedroom."
"Actually, it's my room." I raised my eyebrows.
"Really? But it's so dull?"
He scoffed, "thanks, I'll tell my sister you like her decorating skills." He crossed his arms over his chest, unmoving from my escape route.
"You know what I mean. Shouldn't you have you know, guy stuff? Footballs or baseballs? Pictures of cars or girlfriends? You know teenager stuff? Clothes maybe?" I questioned.
"Thankfully that is none of your concern. But you're now welcome to go back to the rest of the party." He held his hand out, gesturing for me to leave, seemingly agitated.
"Fine," I walked out, but not before commenting, "by the way, easy on the cologne. It smells like a Macy's in here."
I think I saw a hint of a smile cross his face, before it returned to its usual scowl.
I had just begun walking down the staircase when I felt a buzz coming from my chest. I pulled my phone out of my bra and pressed it to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Hey sweetie. It's mom, where are you?"
"I'm staying with Ava tonight, remember?" I left out that I was standing in the middle of a semi-stranger's house in the middle of the night. Okay, when I put it like that it sounds pretty bad.
"Oh that's right, sorry, do you think you could do me a favor?" She sounded stressed.
"Sure, what is it?"
"Olivia was staying at a friends house and woke up feeling sick. Do you think you could go pick her up?"
"Okay. But where is your car? And dad?"
"My car is in the shop still and your dad 's flight hasn't landed yet. He'll be home at 2 am. So I dropped his car at the airport for him."
"Okay, and it's pretty late for dad's flight?" I thought.
"I thought so too."
"Okay, Bye mom," I hung up and slipped my phone back into my dress.

Dragging Ava from the still blaring house was a whole lot more difficult than it sounded. In the end, I had to swipe half a dozen Jell-O shots from the kitchen and promise to do them with her when we got back to her house. Well, I'd pretend to do them until she passed out. She didn't need to know that.
My mom had texted me that Olivia was at her friend Alice's house. Conveniently, it was in the same neighborhood. I parked in the large circle driveway, and walked up to the door, ready to knock. A woman opened the door just as I lifted my arm.
"Oh, hello! Sorry, I didn't know anyone was here." She apologized.
"That's okay, is this your house?"
"No, but my daughter was on a play date with some friends. One of the little girls got sick and so here I am." I noticed a small figure hiding behind her coat.
"Hi, are you friends with Olivia?" She nodded, "I'm her big sister."
She smiled and stepped away from her mother a little bit.
"Really, let me just grab her for you then!" The women said, walking back into the house, leaving the little girl on the steps.
"What is your name sweetie?" I asked her.
"Rachel," she mumbled.
"That's a really pretty name. Mine's Riley, and my friend in the car is Ava. She fell asleep." I pointed at my drooling friend and the little girl laughed.
"Riley!" My little sister came barreling out the door and into my arms.
"Are you ready to go?" I asked once I'd pried her off me. "Hey, I thought you were sick?" She was bouncing around in front of me.
"Yep! I ate so much candy that I threw up. Mrs. Woods got scared that I'd get Alice sick so she called everyone's mom. She worries too much, we were playing Barbie's!" My little sister whined, then noticed Rachel and her mother still waiting beside us."Hey, can Rachel come to our house?" She looked up at me, expectantly. I looked up at Rachel's mom.
"I don't think so tonight girls, it's late, way past your bedtime." I said. "But maybe, tomorrow she can over if you behave." I offer, and they both smiled.
"Definitely, I'll call your mom in the morning, Good night Riley." The older woman smiled and picked up her little girl.
"Bye, Mrs..." I patiently waited for her name.
"Ms. Robbins, but you can call me Elena. Bye girls." They walked away.
"Bye," I scooped up my little sister and walked back to our car. Once I had fastened her car seat, we were on our way.
"It smells funny in here?" She called from the backseat.
"I know, that's Ava's breath. Gross isn't it?" I watched her giggle in the rearview mirror. I expected her to fall asleep soon, considering how late it was now, but instead Shake It Off came on and she began to belt out all of the lyrics perfectly. I sang along with her, albeit wildly off key.
It wasn't long before our house came into view down the dark road. All of the lights were off, so I took that to mean that my mom was already asleep. I pulled up in front of the garage and turned off the engine. "Ava," I nudged her, "We're at my place. Go on inside quietly and I'll take care of Olivia. Try not to wake my mom, or we'll both have some explaining to do." I reminded her handing her a piece of gum to cover her breath.
"Okay." Was all she said as she slowly got out of the car and stalked towards the front door. I walked around to Olivia, and undid her seatbelt, helping her step down out of the car.
"Riley, can I sleep in your room tonight? Karli doesn't ever share the blankets with me." She complained about our other sister.
"Sure, We'll make Ava sleep on the floor." I chuckled, knowing that I'd be the one on the floor by the end of the night.
We quietly walked up the stairs until we reached my bedroom. I flipped on the lamp on my desk, laughing when I saw Ava sprawled out on one side of the bed. Olivia wandered over and climbed into the bed next to her. I took the time to change out of my stuffy clothes and into a pair of sweats and t-shirt, and wiped the majority of my makeup off before allowing myself to go to bed.
It was a tight fit, but we'd make it work. "Goodnight, Riley, I love you." My little sister mumbled half asleep already.
"Good night. I love you too." I replied closing my eyes.
