As I step off of the school bus I feel a sudden wind of cold air and see snowflakes dancing through the wind. I walk home from the bus stop feeling the snow melting into my shoes, suddenly regretting I wore moccasins to school. Once I opened the door to my house I felt the warmth of the heat and smelled the heavenly scent chocolate chip cookies. "Do you want a cookie, Oakley?" My mom offered.
"Maybe later!" I yelled throughout the house. I slip off my wet moccasins and walk around the corner into my bedroom. I slip off my backpack from my shoulders and put it on my chest full of markers, coloring books, and gel pens. I grab my pajamas and my book, Sophia's War. I slip on my pajamas, sit on my bed and start reading my book. I read out loud to myself, with expression and facial expressions. I stare at the book feeling the intensity creep inside my body. As I look up I see a giant ship with the British flag on the top and realize I am no longer in my bedroom and in fact, Wisconsin. I look around and see a 16 year old girl hiding in the bushes watching the ship go by. I run across the grass and sat by her
I ask, "Where are we?" The girl paid no attention to me but only the boat. I looked at her and what she was wearing, a long red dress that had an inch of mud on the bottom of her skirt. Her hair was a light brown and up in a messy high bun. I looked around again realizing I am not in the year 2016 but in the year 1776 and in, New York. Sitting next to me is Sophia Calderwood, a spy for the British Army. I am in the book Sophia's War. I stand up and start to freak out, I am pacing back and forth thinking of how I might never see my family again. Or my dogs, or never going to school. I see Sophia get up and start running away.
"Hey!" I yelled "Come back!" Sophia kept running like she didn't hear me. I start to run after her. I feel myself running out of air, like a fish out of the water. When she finally stopped, she looked around trying to find something. I try to think what was hidden in the book, the map! The map to where the British were going! I start to look with her, I look behind a tree and see a piece of paper pinned to the back. I waved my arms around so she could see me.
I screamed, "Sophia! I found the map!" Sophia kept looking. I don't think that Sophia can see or hear me, how do I give her the map? Sophia sighed and sat down against the rock. She reaches behind her and pulled a book from her dress that she keeps in her skirt. I read the book title called The Impossible.
"As Oakely slips off her wet moccasins she yells "Maybe later" throughout the house." Sophia read from the book. I look up and realize that book is about me. I grab the book from her as she screamed. I guess that she can't see the book. I think to myself that if I can make a story come to life by reading it, I can make it go away by reading it. I start to read the story letting the hope take control of my emotions. I look up and feel the softness of my bed covers and smell the heavenly scent of those chocolate chip cookies. I lay back land on my bed and sigh with relief. I let the happiness inside me take control of my body. I am back to 2016 and not stuck in 1776.
