I woke up at about 10:00p.m.. I hadn't meant to doze off. I meant to wait up for Mother. I wanted to talk to her. The only time I really ever saw her was at night, and she was usually exhausted, so time with Mother was precious. But she wasn't home yet so everything was fine. But it didn't feel fine. When I listened closer I realized Lily's soft snore was gone. Climbing down from the top bunk of the bed I looked around the room for her. She wasn't anywhere. I was about to panic when I heard her quiet muffled footsteps in the hall. I relaxed. She must have gone to get a drink of water. But instead of coming into our shared room, she went on down the hall towards the bedroom that nobody ever went into. I started towards the door. What was she doing?
