Prompt: Barry's been acting off since he woke up from the coma and Iris knows something's up, so they have a talk.
Barry sat at a table alone at Jitters, sipping a coffee and waiting for Iris to finish her shift. Meanwhile, Iris was watching, handing customers their money back and grabbing lattes while furtively glancing at Barry every couple minutes.
He had his head down, staring at the table. For once his phone was nowhere to be seen, not to mention he was actually sitting down instead of leaning against the counter, criticizing her coffee making skills or going on about some new science tidbit he had found out. He was off, and Iris needed to know what was going on.
Once her shift was finished, Iris poured two cups of thick, creamy, hot chocolate and walked over to where Barry was sitting, running his hands through his disheveled chestnut hair.
"Hey Bear." She smiled, setting the cups down on the table. He looked up and Iris could see how tired his eyes were. He half smiled, but it seemed dimmer than his usual goofy grin.
"Alright Barry Allen. I've known you for practically my entire life. How long did you think you could keep this from me?" Iris scolded, sipping her hot chocolate.
Iris didn't exactly know what "this" was but she was hoping he'd just break down and tell her already. Something was up with her best friend and she was oblivious to what.
His hazel eyes widened as fear flashed through them. How could she know? He hadn't done anything suspicious in front of her, had he?
Damn, is she that good?
He tried to hide his true fear by swallowing and playing it cool.
"Keep what from you?" He replied softly, reaching for the hot chocolate, avoiding eye contact.
The Crimson blush was creeping up into his cheeks. He could feel it's heat. Barry had never been a good liar. He always blushed so goddamn easily, blowing his cover almost every time he had to lie.
"Something's obviously wrong. Why won't you just tell me?" Iris pleaded.
Her beautiful chocolate brown eyes were burning into his when he finally looked at her from under his lashes, not wanting to make eye contact and have to tell the truth. Her hand had wrapped itself in his and her thumb was rubbing reassuring circles over his knuckles. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if he told her?
Iris, I'm the Flash.
He just wanted to say it! It was the perfect time. Instead, something completely different spilled out of his mouth.
"I just didn't expect everything to change so much you know? It's been nine months for everyone else except for me. It's been, like, two weeks for me and I feel like I'm behind. Everyone moved on without me and I'm still stuck nine months in the past, desperately trying to pick up the pieces of the accident..." Barry blurted, not even expecting it from himself. That was part of the truth, anyway.
"Oh Barry! Why didn't you tell me sooner? Honey, I know it must be so hard to watch everyone go on with their lives but you're going to be fine! Nothing's changed. I'm still here for you as much as I've always been. You know you can come to me any time." Iris replied with a voice filled with care. She yanked Barry up by the hand to pull him into a bone crushing hug.
"Iris–choking. Not–breathing." He laughed as she squeezed him tighter. She let him go and began laughing at the hot chocolate stain on his maroon sweatshirt. She hadn't realized that she had crushed the cup between them during the hug.
"Oh I'm so sorry!" She got out between giggles.
Barry was laughing too and Iris was glad to see that she could make his smile appear just for a moment. Barry's cheeks were bright red as he yanked off his sweatshirt to reveal a grey t-shirt underneath, but not before Iris got a quick glimpse of his stomach as the shirt rode up a little bit.
Iris had seen Barry shirtless countless times before. It was inevitable because she had lived with him for so many years. Iris didn't know if there was more to what Barry was keeping from her, but she knew one thing for damn sure. He definitely did not have that fine six pack before the Lightning had struck.
Idk I thought this was a really cute, subtle westallen one shot.
