"Your mother's Graham Thomas roses are still producing buds". he said. "Imagine that." He stared into the rear view mirror and Khrystyna's imagined his eys growing round behind his sunglasses. It's not like he was announcing the engagement of pope. "Graham Thomas rose are known for being late bloomers," she said. Lifting her face from her book so she could see her smile. Her dad complained that she tended to come across as a know-it-all, and she wanted to be sure he didn't take offense at her comment.
" Yes, but this is a new batch of buds, not blooms we should enjoy roses into October."
Nodding politely, Khrystyna returned to her novel. She had an important labor day weekend ahead of her, and she knew it would be filled with activities that would keep her from finishing the story that had been distracting her for the past week. The love-struck couple had finally sealed their relationship with a torrid sex scene so passionate, Khrystyna had gone red in the face when she read it. The elderly woman sitting next to her on the air plane must have sensed something, as she kept glancing critically at khrystyna. Maybe she was just scrutinizing Khrystyna's obsession with her book, old people were terribly out of loop.
"Are you looking forward to your eighteenth birthday, Miss Khrystyn? Dion asked." I know your father hosted a party for you and your friends in Boston las weekend, but this time you'll be truely eighteen."
Khrystyna sighed as she read the last line of the paragraph she was on before dragging her eyes away frim the page. Of course, she was looking forward to the part. She would officially be an adult in two-day s' time. Ans her privileges at the all-girls school she'd had been attending since sixth grade would extend to dinner parties hosted by the near by all-boys school. The stories that circulated about those dinner paries were legendary. The hand holding under the tables, the passing of love letters , the illicit kissing. It's the reason she took up reading romance novels and the begging of the summer. She wanted to be ready if the legends turned out to be true.
"Very much . I haven't seen Uncle C in six months, and i always enjoy practicing my Italian with lady Lila."
Khrystyna took a moment to glance at the landscape passing by at a leisurely pace. Dion had always been a careful driver, although she wondered if his slow, steady methods for navigating the winding roads of Nova Scotia stemmed for his desire to take in the scenery. There was no denying she was blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth ; the rocky sea side the marshland, and the forest of the tree's whose fall colors always tried to get a head start over the rest of the country.
Would her dad have her favorite more saddle and ready for her to take a jaunt across the expanse of their fifteen acres? she loved to ride the trail when the trees were starting to change. Maybe her brother Deanthony would acompany her on a ride to the beach. HEr parents still didn't go alone, but that would change to be a run-of-the-mill birthday celebration, and flutter of excitment took hold of her as she imagined the adventures that lay ahead.
