I woke up, the first light of dawn filtering through the fern roof of the nursery. Today was the day when we took the power back.
I flicked my tail and nudged my three small kits awake. I let out a purr as they wiped away the sleep from their blue eyes.
"Mama? What's going on?" Asked Mistykit yawning. Featherkit's squeal like laughter filled the air. I turned to see Duskkit pushing his sister around in the moss. The silver kit was fighting back and leaping around trying to confuse him. It hit me like claws: they were preparing to fight.
"Featherkit! Duskkit! Stop that! You're not fighting remember!" I shouted trying to keep my cool. The kits looked over at me and then looked worriedly at their paws.
"Sorry mama..." Featherkit mewed quietly. Sighing, I rounded up my kits with my tail.
"Come on now, remember to keep the noise down." I instructed as I led them quietly across the camp. Carefully, I ducked my head and padded into the medicine cave. Mistykit, Duskkit and Featherkit followed on their small paws.
Suddenly, a grey shape ran past me: Mistykit. I looked up and saw Oakkit and Barkkit at the very back of the cave. The grey she kit bounded over to them with a squeak.
"Quiet..." Mousenose shushed peaking her head out the shadows. She turned her brown tabby head to me. "Everything ok?" She whispered.
I nodded solemnly. She knew I was lying: I could never forget what I saw that day. My mother: lying face down in a pool of her own blood as it spilled from a deep gash in her throat. ; her grey fur matted with the sticky, red liquid. Waspwing had killed her as a form of revenge for the kits not being his.
However, that wasn't the only reason I wasn't ok. Dawnshadow was also dead. I knew it was no ones fault, but I still felt a sick, guilty feeling inside me when I thought of that moment: Dawnshadow lying in camp, toms laughing at her as she convulsed in coughing fits and her kits unable to show emotion for the fear of being killed. Then, Waterfur stepping in to save her, only to die as well...
Suddenly, I snapped back to reality. Mousenose was staring at me with a look of concern.
"Hopeheart?" She asked looking at me. I shook away my day-mare.
"I'm fine." I mewed looking at her. She smiled softly and then looked at our kits.
"Kits, I want you to stay here where you're safe. Is that understood?" The brown tabby mewed looking at the small cats. They nodded quickly. "Well then...Hopeheart! Let's go!"
I smiled nervously. "Let's win this thing!" I said adrenaline rushing through my veins.
Determined, I took my place beside Duskflower and Streamsplash. The older cats nodded at me. I let out a nervous smile and looked through the fern tunnel.
Toms were beginning to stir and I felt my paws itch with anticipation.
"This is it..." I murmured under my breath. I had to give my kits a future and I'd never beak my promise to Dawnshadow. She's died for this cause as well as Stonefeather and Waterfur.
Other she cats began to gather around us as well as Mistfall, Vinetail and Spiderpaw. I silently exchanged a nod with them. This was our moment.
"For equality!" I yowled as the huge crowd of cats ran forward towards the main camp.
The terrified toms ears pricked up and their legs shock with fear as we hurtled towards them, our claws unsheathed. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mistfall slam Mudface to the floor. The brown Tom let out a surprised yowl and my mate pinned him down.
"This is for my mother!" Mistfall spat as he sank his sharp teeth into the evil Tom. Mudface spluttered out red blood from his mouth and rolled over into a pool of his own blood. Mistfall staggered back and licked away the blood from his muzzle. He had done what had needed to be done.
I snapped back into the moment and looked over at Duskflower and Streamsplash. They we battling two new warriors : Icefoot and Greytail.
Duskflower gasped in pain as Icefoot slashed at her throat with his claws. She stumbled back in absolute agony and landed by my paws as I ran towards them to help. I gazed at her bloodied fur in shock.
"No..." I murmured looking down at the old she cat. She couldn't be dead! Not after all this! Anger surged through me and I smashed my body into the white Tom.
"What the?!" Icefoot yowled as furiously sank my claws into the Toms throat. I gulped regretfully as his flanks stayed still and the last breath of air had escaped from his lungs.
"I'm doing the right thing." I assured myself as stated boldly at Greytail. "And you're next!"
Greytail's eyes widened in terror as me and Streamsplash paced towards the tabby.
"Everything I could've had I never did because of you toms...I'm making sure future kits do..." The blue-grey she cat hissed at him as he cowered in fear by the Warriors den.
My azure eyes glistened with hope as the tom scattered away. Streamsplash sat up straight, a proud look on her face.
"That was great Streamsplash! We were so terrifying that we didn't need to k-" I beamed only to be interrupted by Frostheart's slashing claws. Shocked by the pain, I shut my eyes tightly and tried my hardest to shake the White tom off my back.
"You killed my son!" He hissed angrily in my ear. "You deserve to d- eh eh ah..."
The weight lifted and I peaked over my shoulder to see to Frostheart's bleeding body; Shadepelt standing over him.
"I'll always be your brother Hopeheart." He assured me. His mouth wasn't smiling but his eyes were. My eyes lit up and I smiled at my brother.
"Thanks..." I purred nuzzling him happily. Shadepelt purred back and rested his head on me.
"Hopeheart! We're in the middle of a battle here! We have no time to be worrying about sibling relationships!" Streamsplash reminded me, pushing her head between us.
