I spent my life feeling invisible, but I was there. Even though only a few people knew I existed, even they would look right past me sometimes. But, that was before the human race started to actually disappear.
No. People didn't actually disappear. Well, at least not for long. But when they came back, something was off, like they had changed somehow. When it happened with my parents, I knew it was time to leave. They had gone shopping, while I stayed home talking to my best and only true friends, Kylie Fontaine, the outcast by choice, and Camille Evans, who doesn't talk nicely to anyone but Kylie and I, but even that's rare.

"I hate the way they talk to you!" Kylie stated, sounding extremely sure of herself .
"They barely ever talk to us, anyway. We are invisible! Right, Cam?" I argued back, but not sounding as confident as I wanted to.
"Yeah. Those bitches act as if we are about as fucking important as dirt! And when they do talk to us, I want to take my gun and shoot them in the face!" Cam yelled.
"Whoa! Cool it. Justin taught you how to shoot to defend yourself, not shoot bitchy people in the face. If he did, half the school would be dead!" Kylie said in a calm voice.

"Hey, honey! We're home! Come downstairs, please!" Huh. My parents are home early. Weird, but whatever.
"Hey chicas. I've got to go. Love you, Cam! Love you, Ky! See you Monday!" Then, I hung up.
"I'm coming, Mom!" I yelled downstairs. I expected her to yell hurry up, but she didn't. She was really quiet. So, using my quiet nature, I snuck downstairs. And what I saw scared the hell out of me.
I had been noticing adults acting differently recently. Blank expressions, empty actions: something was happening to people, and it's not just living in New York City. They were changing, and like hell were they going to change me.

I know it sounds stupid, but I jumped out my window. Don't worry. I'm a prepper. I know to survive any possible situation you could put me in, including this, which I believe may be the apocalypse.
Que scary music.... Duhn duhn duhn!
But, I'm being serious.
Anyway, the net I had step up caught me, and I took off running with my end-of-the-world bag on my shoulders. This included 2 Glocks and a fighting knife, as well as a few essentials. Meanwhile, my mind is racing, calculating the distance from my house to Ky's apartment. Hopefully, she's not brainwashed, too.
When I get to Ky's place, i knock on the door. Ky comes out from around the door, a gun in her hand, pointing it straight at my head.
"Whoa! Whoa!" I yelled, raising my hands up, instinctively, to show Ii mean no harm. "Don't shoot!"
"What the hell, Jilly?! I was ready to shoot you!" She sighed in exasperation.
"I guess you figured it out, too, huh? I asked, while setting down my bag on her bed.
"Oh, the apocalypse? She said. "Yeah. I saw some guy get hit by a bus, and walk it off like nothing happened, like the fucking Hulk or some shit! So, how did you figure it out?"
"My parents were acting strange. They were being overly nice, almost like they were different people." I said, trying not to cry in front of Ky.
"Like they were brainwashed? Ky asked.
"Yeah." I replied, realizing what she was implying.
"The guy was acting the same way. I couldn't talk to him. He wouldn't respond." She said. Through her brave face, I could see the worry in her eyes.
"How soon can we get out of the city?" Ky questioned.
"Taking the back route, I'd say about 45 minutes." I responded after doing the math in my head.
"We have to pick up Cam. If we're leaving, there's no way in hell I'm leaving her." Ky said defiantly.
"Agreed." I said.
"We gotta move fast." she said, grabbing her stuff and running out with me right behind her.
While we were running, our phones buzzed.
'I'm at city limits. Meet me here. Something weird is going on.'
Ky and I looked at each other.
"Well... Looks like Cam knows." Ky said.
