The blue water rippled beneath my paddle as the boat glided gently along.
"The item of interest is just around the corner if I recall correctly," said my grandpa, Gerald.
"It is," replied Martha, my grandma. One of my grandparents' favorite activities was kayaking. This time they deemed me old enough to come along, and of course I volunteered happily. Nature was my element, and seeing the caves of the Kellriah Islands was something I'd wanted to do all my life.
Our boats rounded the corner and there, right in front of me, was Twothree Cave! Magnificent grey-tan rock arched over the small entrance to a long, half water-filled cave, ideal for boating.
"Lead the way!" exclaimed Gerald.
"Um, I guess... but how will we see without light?"
"This trip is our treat to you! So venture forth!"
"One of the neat things about this cave is that ya can see cuz there are openings in the roof," assured Martha.
"Indeed there are," added Gerald.
"I- I will," I decided, resolving to be courageous.
I dipped my paddle into the clear, teal water. Caves were one of my favorite things ever, along with many, many others. Once I could tell I'd be traveling in a straight line for a while, I let my gaze wander to the cracks of sky peeking down from the rock ceiling, only 5 feet above my head. I tried not to think about how far below me the floor was. Deep water was one of my fears, but ironically also something I liked, especially in caves, where it was clear, teal, and mysterious. But not exactly right underneath me. That was a little scary.
"Pretty, ain't it?" Martha remarked.
"Sure is!" I replied, "I'm going to stop and drink some water."
"What a genius idea," said Gerald, taking his own water bottle out of his and Martha's shared kayak.
"Wait... what is that?" I asked, noticing light shining around a corner, a little brighter than that from a skylight and a little... more violet.
"Now that ya mention it, that's a kinda weird light over there," said Martha.
"The violet rays of a clock ticking backward, a sunset of its own inside a minuscule cavern far greater than Earth itself," said Gerald.
"Wait... what!?"
"Oh, just quoting Avery Cunningsmith, the most poetic poet of the century, in my personal opinion."
"Ah," I said after taking a last sip of water, "so should we, um, get going? And what about that weird light?"
"I wouldn't worry 'bout it, probably a strange ceiling hole," said Martha.
I paddled on, and the light grew brighter, still oddly violet. I rounded the corner.
A loud swooshing noise like the sucking in of air suddenly soared past my ears. The light was almost blinding, but I could still barely make out a deep whirlpool forming in the center of the large cavern in front of me.
My heart raced. "Turn around, now!" I screamed.
"We're tryin'!" called Martha, "Grab our boat!"
I reached toward the tip of the kayak, straining against the force of the growing eddy, and finally managed to secure a hold, although not a tight one.
"I'm falling in! Help me!" I yelled.
Gerald whispered something to Martha that I couldn't hear. It seemed to last for ages. A drop of water formed and fell slowly from the cave's stalactited ceiling and landed on my hand, smaller droplets spraying out from it. My hand, as if of its own accord, slowly let go of the boat. No matter how hard I willed it to stop, it still slowly slipped off. Everything was growing brighter. The last thing I remember was the ceiling spinning into the distance and the white-violet light surrounding me.* * *
