Missed Chances

A few days earlier...
She walked along the forested path, just about to run into her future husband - literally. Birds chirped and the sun shone through the trees. It was a nice day. The invisible boy was close now - just a few feet away.
But just then - a mysterious object materialized in front of her. She stepped back in surprise, and the invisible boy walked right past her, his cloak barely brushing her arm. She'd missed her chance.
She picked up the object - it was rectangular and about 3 1/2 by 2 inches. It was shiny and black on one side and had the image of a mountain and forest on the other. Martha sat down on a log to examine it further.

I grasped at the ground, but my hand was slipping off - the green light of the time portal was devouring us.
We landed on mossy forest ground surrounded by firs and cedars, a wanted sign for Snow White nearby.
"The Enchanted Forest," I said to Hook.
"Aye, I'd say that's where we are," he replied.
I slowly stood up and walked over to the torn and weathered poster.
"Well, there are worse times we could've landed in, like in the middle of the Great Ogre War," commented Hook. I sighed. That might've been funny if we hadn't just fallen through an irreversible time portal to a time where all of our friends and enemies would have no idea who we were.
"What do we do?" I asked the world, "just sit around here until some fairy godmother comes to take us home?"
"Well, I could use one of Granny's burgers right about now meself," said Hook. There was no better plan, so I followed him into the forest. Still, I had a feeling that he had no idea where he was going.
Just then I heard voices coming from the trees ahead.
"All of you - line up!" commanded a harsh, female voice. Frantic scrabbling of feet ensued.
"Is that Regina?" I stood, shocked.
"Sure looks like it," replied Hook.
"Down here," I whispered, and crouched behind some bushes, up the hill from the scene before us. Hook did the same.
Regina, or the Evil Queen stood in front of a long line of villagers, two Black Knights at her side.
"If any of you know where Snow White is, make this easy, and tell me," she commanded imperially as she strode down the line. A woman at the end started quivering, somehow managing to look more scared than the rest.
"She's even worse than I remembered," remarked Hook under his breath. I nodded, still shocked that Regina could be this evil. But this was the past, and her current 'nice' streak was pretty new.
"You," the Evil Queen walked over to the woman on the end, "where is Snow White?"
    "I - I don't know..." she stammered.
"Guards, take her away. Kill all of them."
"Yes, your highness," said one of the the Black Knights. They stepped forward toward the petrified crowd.
"We have to stop them!" I whispered frantically.
"I don't think that's such a great plan," said Hook.
"They're going to kill all of those people if we don't do something!" I said  even though I knew Hook was right. We couldn't afford to mess with the past, even if it seemed like it was for the better. "All right, fine," I said reluctantly.
We snuck back through the forest as quick and as quietly as we could. When we were far enough away, we started walking normally again. All those people I let get killed still weighed heavily on my shoulders.
We came to a small, straight dirt road, cutting a swath of tan through the green of the forest. I heard a rumbling and clacking growing louder by the second.
"Get down!" I whispered, and once again we were hiding in the bushes. Sure enough, down the road came an ornately decorated white and gold carriage. Inside was - David!
Suddenly Hook whispered, "Up there!" and nodded his head to the left. I carefully turned to see a hooded figure about 20 feet up in a tree, silently watching the carriage.
"Who is that?" I asked, scooting back to get a better view. I leaned my elbow on a stick and crack! It broke.
The figure spun around in surprise, losing their footing and falling to the ground. As they pulled them self up to run away, I caught a glimpse of wavy black hair - Snow White. And she'd missed her chance to meet Prince Charming.
