Let's get one thing straight: never, ever ask the story behind a giant family your father created with his runaway whore.
You think your family is mad?
"You adopted?" I scoff at Jace. I swear this family is so dysfunctional. We can't even have a meal without fighting.
"Evelyn wanted more girls so we adopted Hazel and Alice."
Asher clears his throat.
"Then I wanted another boy so we adopted Asher last."
The adopted kids must be human, Dylan tells me.
I agree. They must me. There isn't a mythical creature adoption agency. None that I know of anyways.
"So you guys had four kids together?" Dylan squints.
Someone needs a hobby, I roll my eyes.
"Actually the boys are just mine." Evelyn sips her wine.
"Jason and Will were around the same age as Carter when we both left our lives, to spend our lives together." Jace gives an adoring look towards Evelyn. I almost want to adore their love, if it wasn't my father and the woman he left me for.
"So you had the other girls?" Dylan asks.
"Leila and Tess happened in between things."
"Wait," I stopped the conversation. "You had Tess before you had me?" I looked at Jace.
"It was an accident," Jace explains, only to make Tess scoff.
"That doesn't mean I don't love you honey," Jace soothes, only to make me scoff.
"I love all my kids equally" Jace dismisses.
"Why am I surprised?" I scoff. He's acting like he's been there for Chloe and I our whole lives and have done nothing but loved us. When in reality I haven't heard from him in ages.
"Carter, I'm just trying to be the father you should've had when you were growing up." Jace says sincerely. I squint. The way he said he said that makes it sound suspicious. Then it hits me.
"I see you haven't told the Brady Bunch about Chloe." I cross my arms.
"Yes," Dylan raises his arm to the butler. "Sir, may I get some popcorn to go with this show?"
"Can it blondie." Asher snarks,
"What're you gonna do about it, pretty boy?" Dylan taunts.
"Hey I ain't afraid of no redneck." Asher slams his fists on the table, rising.
"It's a good thing I'm not just a redneck then." Dylan stands up just as dramatic. I watch as Dylan flashes his eyes for a split second. If I wasn't watching so intensely I wouldn't have seen it, but from the look on Asher's face, he did.
"That's enough," I stand, tugging on Dylan's shirt.
"Who's Chloe?" Tess asks, looking between Evelyn and Jace.
Jace rubs his head.
"You almost had me fooled." I rise.
"Carter, I really have changed." Jace stares hard at me.
I scoff. "You haven't proven anything to me you selfish piece of-" Dylan yanks me down back in my seat.
