I don't know how this all happened we all use to be so happy. At that point in my life, I loved my family; even my dad. How did our family become so broken? This is where everything went wrong in my life. It was this day I think everything went wrong.
"Arrior, Jasper dinner's almost ready will you come set the table please." said Mom.
Jasper's my older brother and best friend.
"Okay, coming." said Jasper and I as we raced down the stairs laughing.
We loved mom's cooking. She was a wizard in the kitchen and tonight she was cooking our favorite. She didn't have tell us, she knew we could smell the heavenly aroma from our rooms. It was killing us not to go downstairs and ask if dinner was done. We knew she would tell us when she was done we just didn't want to wait, but we made a deal. Jasper and I promised we wouldn't do it anymore as long she would cook it at least once or twice a month. So when she called us down we were inexplicably happy.
"Man it's about time the food was ready. We've been waiting for hours."
"Gosh Jasper do you have to sound like such a prick?"
"Sorry, I know I'm just soooooo hungry."
"Yea I am too but the sooner we finish setting the table the sooner we can eat. So instead of complaining about how hungry you are why don't you use that energy to finish this table." I retorted.
"Ouch hurtful now who's sounding like a prick."
"Sorry, I know I'm being a brat. I just, I'm really worried about granddad and I guess being hungry doesn't help either. I just hope he's alright." I apologized.
"Yea me too but mom said that we would talk more about his situation at dinner."
"I know but she also said when dad gets home and we don't know when he's coming."
Just then Arthur, my (real) father, walks in.
"I'm home!" yells Dad.
"I guess right now." Jasper said whispering into my ear.
"Hello Honey," Mom said kissing him on the cheek, "Dinner is almost ready just sit down and relax."
"Thanks, babe. Are you sure you don't need help with anything? I can set the table if you would like."
"No need, father, Jasper and I have already finished." I said hugging him.
"Really? I'm shocked, since when do you and Jasper get off the couch? he asked teasingly.
"You really don't give us enough credit, dad, it takes a lot of energy to turn on the TV." said Jasper as he hugged his dad.
"Or find the remote."I said, giggling.
Just then as if my giggling set everyone off Jasper and Dad broke into fits of laughter.
"Okay, everybody, take a seat,", said Mom as she placed our food down on the table, "Dinner's ready."
"Ok hun," said Dad as he tried to recompose himself, "we're coming."
We all took our seat at the dinner table just as mom was putting our plate in front of us.
"Bon Appetite." said Mom.
"Thank you mom." said Jasper and I as we prepared to down our food.
"Aren't you forgetting something?" said Mom.
"What?" said Jasper with food hanging from his mouth.
"Don't speak with food in your mouth, Jasper, it's very impolite." said Mom with her face in dismay, " And you forgot to pray."
"Yea, Jasper. " I said mockingly.
"You're no better, young lady, I saw you about to take a bite just now. It's just Jasper was quicker than you." said Mom.
"Yea." said Jasper.
"Enough of this nonsense! Bow your heads and pray children so we can all eat." said Dad irritably.
So we prayed.
"Much better. Now, how was your day Jasper?"
"It was great, mom! We actually learned how to fight today. I mean we only learned the basics today but within a few months they said we'll learn how to do The Crane!" Jasper said gleefully.
"You mean," said gasping, " like the one they do in those karate movies."
"Yup." said Jasper puffing up his chest.
"Lucky!" I said biting my lip as jealousy seeped in.
Jasper got to do all the cool things because he's a boy. He learned how to fly a spaceship, ride a bull, shoot a cannon, etc. He even got to camp in the desert and on mountains for a month. And that's not even half of it. now he's learning Kung Fu. That's so unfair. All I get to do is...
"What about you Arrior?" said dad cutting off my thoughts
"Nothing as exciting as Jasper." , I said jealously," All we did today was get ready for swordsman competition. I was thinking since I turn 16 in a few weeks that I could actually go this year."
"Well actually hun." said Dad.
"Pleaseeee dad I really want to go on that trip." I said cutting him off.
"Arrior listen to what you father has to say" said Mom.
"Fine" I said grumpily.
"As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted.", said Dad with a bit of humor in his voice," Actually Arrior you can go."
"Dad I know you want me to be safe but I'm... Wait did you say I could go!" I said astonished at what i just heard."
"Yes you can Arrior all you mother and I want is for you and your brother to be happy." said Dad.
"That's great! I can't wait to tell granddad tomorrow." I said drifting off as I realized what I just said.
Everyone at the table quieted.
"How is he?" said Jasper breaking the silence.
"Well to be honest not too well." said Mom.
"What?!?! I thought you said he was getting better." I said my voice cracking.
"And he was honey but then last Thursday he had a relapse. The doctors say they don't know if he'll make it." my mom says sobbing.
"Now Now Hun.", said a my father as he went around the table to console my mother," They didn't say it in those exact words."
"So he's going to die." I said just above an audible whisper. It was more of a statement then a question.
"Don't say that Arrior. Granddad's strong he'll make it." said Jasper in a consoling voice.
Jasper always was the strong one out of the two of us. Always the optimist but I couldn't take his positive words right now. Not now. Not when my whole world is collapsing.
"They couldn't have made it clearer Jasper. They basically just said he weak. Don't you get it Jas he's dying." I said yelling at my brother.
Jasper was suddenly quiet. He was looking everywhere except the three of us. I think in that moment it final sunk in that his grandfather was dying.
Suddenly the phone rang. Mom got out of Dad's arms and walks to the phone. She paused a minute to collect herself. Then picks up the phone and says...
"Hello" Mom said.
I'm not exactly sure who it was or what they said, but when I saw my mom turn pale white and fall to the floor I knew it wasn't good. Then I suddenly pictured Granddad.
Then all I remember is everything going dark.
