PROLUDGE

"Kitty, I wanna go see Daddy."

Battling with grief from the mentioning of my beloved father, I bend down and take my sisters tiny hands in mine.

"Anything you want, Mel. Go put on your coat, it's chilly outside." I smile at her and release her hands so she can get her coat.

"MAMA! MELANIE AND I ARE GOING OUT!" I shout to my mother. As usual she doesn't answer. Too caught in the grief of losing her husband. My dad was a police officer and was killed on the job by a rabid animal; ever since then my mother hasn't been the same.

Mama and my Pa were, what I like to call, soul mates. So deeply in love they could never be out of reach with each other. You could always tell by the way they looked at each other with so much awe, love and happiness. Like they were each others saviors. Then my father was suddenly ripped away from her and just like that, it was as if my mother had died too. Leaving me at the age of only sixteen to take care of both myself and Melanie.

Just then my beautiful baby sister came running up too me. Her blonde curls bouncing under her favorite hat and her petite body rapped up in her big coat. She placed her tiny hand in mine.

"Ready?" I asked Mel with a loving smile, she nodded. I opened the door to lead her outside when she stopped at the last second and shouted-

"Bye Mama, I love you!" She waited for an answer but as usual she didn't get one. It crushed me too see my six year old sister's face fall. I lead her outside and closed the door only too pick her up and twirl her, making her giggle.

"Put me down, Kitty!" She yelled at me while laughing.

"Not until I see a smile, baby doll!" I shouted back. She smiled at me using our dad's nick-name for her.

"There it is and might I add what a beautiful smile you have!" I said in a western accent, making Mel giggle. I put her down and grabbed her hand once again.

"Let's go see Daddy." I smiled to her and she smiled back.

About ten minutes later, we made it to the graveyard where my deceased father lay at rest.

"I'll race you, kitty!" Mel yelled to me while taking off towards our fathers grave. I smiled at her nickname for me and jogged to catch up to her but staying a few feet behind to let her win.

When she finally made it to our dad's headstone she yelled "I WON! I won! Did you see that Daddy?" My heart ached but I kept up with the charade by bending over and clasping my knees as if out of breath.

"She's just too fast, Dad." I said to the head stone. "But I'm still stronger!" I yelled and tackled Mel to the ground, quickly turning so I took the force of the fall and started to tickle her. Mel giggled uncontrollably. I sat back up on the newly grown grass in front of our dads grave with Melanie in my lap.

After what seemed like hours of me and Mel talking to our father's grave; the autumn's sun started descend signaling us that it was time to go.

"Say goodbye Mel, it's time to go home." I told her and she sighed.

"Bye, bye Daddy. I love you." She kissed the head stone which read-
